Aquaman 2 is about to take a dive! Premiering just in time for the holidays, when is Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom's release date?

The first movie of the Aquaman franchise was released in 2018. Directed by James Wan and featuring Jason Momoa as Aquaman, it introduced us to the underwater world of Atlantis and the war that was waged against the humans on the surface.

Aquaman became one of the top-grossing DC Comic films to have been released, so it is no wonder that the second movie has come to fruition.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is swimming its way to theaters by December 20, 2023, so here is everything you need to know about the movie to help tide you through.

Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom initially planned on coming out in theaters on December 20, 2023. The second Aquaman movie was originally supposed to premiere on December 21, 2022, but another DC movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods took that release.

Then on August 24, 2022, Warner Bros announced yet another date reshuffle that involved most of the titles it would release, including Shazam and The Flash.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Gets Third Delayed Release Date

As per Warner Bros., Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has decided to push the theatrical release of the sequel once again.

Instead of coming out Wednesday, December 20th, the movie's release date has been moved to Friday, December 22nd. This might also have something to do with closing in its release date on Christmas day, considering sales would likely skyrocket during the holidays.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Filming

The team began production sometime in early 2021, with principal photography starting in July 2021, as confirmed by Jason Momoa when he arrived in London to start filming. Filming for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was wrapped up by January 2022.

Patrick Wilson as Orm

Most of the original cast from the first Aquaman movie will return to play their characters in the second movie, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Jason Momoa still plays the titular role of Aquaman, also known as Arthur Curry, the half-human, half-Atlantean hero with the superpower to communicate with marine animals.

During his interview on The Drew Barrymore Show in May 2021, Momoa talked about how he contributed in some form to the script of the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. He said he was very much encouraged by his co-writers and the directors.

  • Yahya Abdul-Mateen II also returns as Black Manta, Aquaman’s human nemesis,
  • Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin,
  • Vincent Regan as Atlan,
  • Patrick Wilson will also return as Aquaman’s half-brother, Orm Marius,
  • and Dolph Lundgren, who plays King Nereus,
  • Vince Regan as Atlan,
  • Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry,
  • and Nicole Kidman as Atlanna.

Amber Heard will also be reprising her role as Mera, the water-bending Atlantian, despite the tabloid drama and the high-profile courtroom case.

However, reports recently surfaced that Momoa pushed for Heard to be removed from the sequel.

Variety released a bombshell report, describing the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom set as "hostile". The trade also alleges that Momoa came to the set drunk one day dressed like Johnny Depp, presumably to mock Heard.

As for newcomers to the film, we're looking at Indya Moore to play the villainous role of Karshon, with Jani Zhao as Stingray.

Meanwhile, Pilou Asbæk has been cast in a mystery role, all of which we can look forward to once the Aquaman sequel releases.

Black Manta

Warner Bros. and DC have released the official plot details of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which you can read below:

Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenger his father's death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time, Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force.
To defeat him, Aquaman will turn his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman's family, and the world, from irreversible destruction.

Another likely path the movie may take is the exploration of the Seven Kingdoms. In the lore of the DC comic books, Atlantis is one of the seven oceanic kingdoms, and the other kingdoms are Xebel, a military kingdom, The Kingdom of Deserters, and The Trench.

The Trench is found in the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the ocean. It is home to some of the most vicious creatures in the seven seas. This may be where the Trench-like creatures that attacked Aquaman and his allies in the first movie.
