Spawn Movie to Follow Deadpool & Logan With This Approach

Movie audiences have been clear on one thing: superhero movies are something that they would want to see with an R-rated treatment. Two successes have already proven this, namely Deadpool and Logan.

Now, another superhero movie is heading for the same treatment, which is none other than Todd McFarlane'sSpawn. Even more exciting is the fact that creator McFarlane has confirmed that Spawn will push for a much darker movie.

Speaking at the Emerald City Comic Con (via Comicbook.com), McFarlane was onstage with Stan Lee. While the two did not give any details related to Spawn, the former did hint that there will be more to come in terms of updates at the San Diego Comic Con. He also dropped a little bomb that makes that wait worth it.

"Listen, I'm going to paint it for you. The movie is going to be a dark R. If here's PG-13 and here's Deadpool and here's Logan, we're going to be here. It's going to be dark. It's going to be nasty."

McFarlane also confirmed that Lee has already given the go signal for this, so this is really happening. This isn't really a surprise, given that both superhero films that were translated in R-rated goodness are from the Marvel franchise.

McFarlane has had a lot of planning done with Spawn, as he had always wanted to direct the series that he has created. Previously, he had grappled with the idea of allowing Spawn to become a big budget movie. Since he was also aware of the consequences that go with big budgets as far as the director is concerned, so he's more willing to limit the budget from somewhere around $80 million to just $10 million.

Granted, Deadpool had a budget of $58 million, but who knows what McFarlane could do with that?
