Snow White Remake Star Broke Silence on Role Criticisms: ‘Because It Needed That’

Rachel Zegler is set to debut as Disney’s first Latin princess sometime in 2024 and has already received backlash for taking the role of Snow White in its live-action remake. Criticisms revolved around the film being ‘too politically correct’ to be enjoyed as its initial animated film. As a response, she spoke with Vanity Fair:

“People are making these jokes about ours being the PC Snow White, where it’s like, yeah, it is — because it needed that. It’s an 85-year-old cartoon, and our version is a refreshing story about a young woman who has a function beyond ‘Someday My Prince Will Come. At the end of the day, I have a job to do that I’m really excited to do. I get to be a Latina princess.’”

What’s the point in making remakes if it keeps the old storyline? Remakes are meant to be produced to tell a familiar story in a different light, to keep up with the times and this Snow White is not going to budge over a few troll comments. Zegler is also set to appear in Shazam! Fury of the Gods next year.

Similarly, Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage spoke about taking offense to Disney’s outdated depiction of the seven dwarves, since people like him continue to be cast in the same restricting role simply because of their appearance, rather than being based on talent to execute their character more properly on the screen.

Read Dinklage’s statement below:

“Literally no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”

A Disney spokesperson addressed Dinklage’s opinion by assuring changes to be made about the film:

“To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community.”

Disney has announced additional cast members for the live-action Snow White, namely, Wonder Woman and Red Notice star Gal Gadot to play the Evil Queen, Broadway actor Andrew Burnap as a new character named Jonathan, Snow White’s love interest, with Pirates of the Caribbean actor Martin Klebba as Grumpy and Dujonna Gift with an unknown role.
