Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin wants the series to grow into something like the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

A sequel featuring Jon Snow (Kit Harrington), a Tales of Dunk and Egg series based on Martin's novellas, and a series about the nine voyages of the Sea Snake created by Bruno Heller are among the live-action Game of Thrones spinoff shows that HBO is currently developing.

The House Targaryen events leading up to the interfamilial conflict known as the Dance of the Dragons will be covered in the prequel series House of the Dragon, which is scheduled to debut in August.

Martin and HBO are also working on three animation projects, though details are still being kept under wraps.

George RR Martin Likens Games of Thrones to MCU

Martin recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the expansion of his Game of Thrones media empire. Although the author has yet to finish his epic novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, he wishes to expand his world in numerous ways, similar to the MCU.

"The MCU has The Avengers, but they also have something offbeat like WandaVision. That’s what I hope we can do with these other Game of Thrones shows, so we can have a variety that showcases the history of this world,” the author shared. “There are only so many times you can do a competition for the Iron Throne."

Martin appreciates how the MCU can feature sizable, easily digested blockbusters like The Avengers while continuing to explore with novel storytelling in works like WandaVision.

GoT Expansion

With Game of Thrones, Martin launched his famed fantasy book series in 1996. David Benioff and DB Weiss began adapting the unfinished A Song of Ice and Fire books for television for HBO in 2011. The series gained international fame until its conclusion in 2019.

The author is aware that trying to recreate the enchantment of HBO's Game of Thrones would be fruitless because it would be rehashing old material. However, Martin is correct in his belief that the growth of his franchise will depend on how well-developed his world and lore are.

Many Game of Thrones spinoff shows are still years away, but audiences may watch House of the Dragon when it premieres on HBO on Aug. 21.
