Shazam 2 Star Helen Mirren Wanted To Do Hespera's Stunts in Fury of the Gods

Helen Mirren has always proven that she could play badass characters in all of her projects and this is especially true in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. But just how far did the Fate of the Furious star go to play a demigod? Mirren revealed that she attempted to do her own stunts in Shazam 2 and it led to an unlikely injury.

In Shazam 2, Helen Mirren plays Hespera, a Daughter of Atlas who is determined to find a weapon that could destroy the world. The villainous role also required a lot of action scenes that Mirren wanted to perform herself but was ultimately stopped when she broke her finger on the set.

"I was incredibly brave and didn't say anything or complain because I wanted to be a real stunty person," Mirren said during an episode of the Graham Norton Show (via Entertainment Weekly).

Although she didn't get to do the difficult stunts, Helen Mirren revealed that she and Shazam 2 co-star Lucy Liu felt that working in heavy costumes was a stunt in itself.

"Don't ask me about the plot, it's too complicated!" she tells Norton. "We are angry goddesses wearing unbelievably heavy costumes. It was very hot and uncomfortable; and, in fact, Lucy said at the end of the first day's shooting, 'They are trying to kill us' in all seriousness."

Luckily, both Mirren and Liu survived and they certainly made it all look so easy. With that in mind, we can't wait to see both Hespera and Liu's Kalypso in action in Shazam 2 next month.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is directed by David F. Sandberg and will bring back Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, Meagan Good, and Djimon Hounsou. Rachel Zegler also joins the cast as Anthea, another Daughter of Atlas. The film will hit theaters on March 17, 2023.
