Shaman King is based on a 1998-2004 manga marketed as shonen. As is the case with many popular works, the manga received an anime adaptation while still ongoing, meaning that the ending the creators intended for us never made it to our screens. The 2021 version is a remake set to make amends.
Shaman King follows Yoh Asakura, who wants to become a shaman; an all-powerful being with the ability to summon spirits and manipulate the world according to their will. To achieve his dream, Yoh must come victorious out of a competition that only takes place once every 500 years.
Episode 17 was tense and introduced pretty high stakes. Ryu's backstory is given, and he asks for Yoh's grandfather to be involved in the Shaman fight. While defeating Boris Tepes Dracula is still a top priority, the characters also have to eventually deal with Hao, the family traitor.
Anna and Manta had almost caught up with Yoh and the others, but things look tough for them as Hao appears... What will he do? Too bad we have to wait tree weeks to find out!

Shaman King (2021) airs weekly with new episodes every Thursday. Due to the Olympic Games, Episode 18, titled "Great Spirit and My Team" will be released on August 12 instead of July 29 on Netflix Japan.
But we also have good news. By then, fans in the West will be able to watch Shaman King episodes on Netflix, starting from August 9.
