After sharing several trailers over the last couple of months, the Saint Seiya live-action movie finally has a US release date as well as dates for its premiere in other countries.

While the Knights of the Zodiac movie will be initially released in Latin American countries and Japan in late April, fans of the iconic franchise in the US won’t have to wait too long as it will get a US cinema release in May.

Saint Seiya or Knights of the Zodiac is one of Shonen Jump’s most popular manga titles. It is also one of its biggest early hits as the manga was serialized back in the late 80s.

Thanks to the manga’s enduring popularity, the franchise has received several adaptations.

Aside from the original 80s anime, lots of Saint Seiya projects have also been released throughout the years.

The latest work is the upcoming live-action film titled Knights of the Zodiac or Saint Seiya: The Beginning in Japan.

Starring as the protagonist, Seiya, is the popular Japanese-American actor Mackenyu.

Aside from being known as Sonny Chiba’s son, Mackenyu is also a hugely popular actor, both in Japan and internationally.

Mackenyu is best known for playing Wataya Arata in the live-action Chihayafuru movies, as well as Enishi Yukishiro in Rurouni Kenshin: The Final.

Along with Seiya, fans are also looking forward to Mackenyu’s next big role as Roronoa Zoro in the upcoming Netflix One Piece live-action series.

In the US, the Saint Seiya live-action film will be released in cinemas on May 12, 2023.

While it’s a couple of weeks after its Japanese release, that’s not a big gap, especially compared to other anime live-action adaptations.

One likely reason is that, unlike most anime live-action movies which are made in Japan for a Japanese audience, Knights of the Zodiac is an international co-production. It even stars notable Hollywood actors.

Here is the complete list of confirmed release dates for the film:

  • April 27 – Brazil, Mexico, Latin America
  • April 28 – Kenya, Romania, Japan
  • May 12 – Nigeria, Poland
  • May 16 – Germany
  • May 24 – France
  • May 25 – Middle East, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Portugal
  • May 26 – Spain, Bulgaria
  • June 23 – South Africa
  • June 26 – Italy
  • July 28 – U.K.

For now, there’s no word yet on which US cinemas the film will be screened in.

However, given that it will be distributed by Sony Pictures, it’s likely going to be widely available in the US and internationally.
