Reports about Queen Elizabeth abdicating and passing the throne to Prince Charles have been making rounds online for quite some time now. Her Majesty was hounded with growing health concerns after Buckingham Palace confirmed that she spent a night in a hospital for a series of tests.

Though the palace revealed Queen Elizabeth’s hospitalization, it did not divulge if the monarch was diagnosed with a serious ailment or not. Speculations about the possible stepping down of Prince Charles intensified after Her Majesty shared, on the eve of the 70th anniversary of becoming monarch, her wish for Camilla Parker-Bowles to be known as Queen Consort when the Prince of Wales takes the throne.

However, amid all the abdication reports, a royal expert suggested that Queen Elizabeth would never step down despite her health scare. Keep on reading to know more details.

Is Queen Elizabeth Stepping Down Very Soon?

Queen Elizabeth is celebrating her Platinum Jubilee this year, which marks her 70years on the throne. However, the celebrations have got off to a bad start since Her Majesty has tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week, just days after Camilla Parker-Bowles and Prince Charles were confirmed to have contracted the deadly coronavirus.

The monarch has reportedly been experiencing “mild, cold-like symptoms” and is expected to continue performing “light duties” at Windsor Castle over the upcoming days. At 95, many followers of the royal family suggested that Queen Elizabeth might give up her position and take some much-needed rest after seven decades of hard work.

However, Dr. Ed Ownes told Express UK:

“It is very unlikely that the Queen will ever step down. Abdication, due to the events of 1936, is considered a ‘bad word’ in the British Royal Family.”

The royal historian claimed the scandal that plagued the abdication of Edward VIII, who stepped down on Dec. 11, 1936, to tie the knot with American divorcee Wallis Simpson, means any future abdication is almost certainly off the cards.

Ed added:

“I think it is highly unlikely unless a future monarch of Britain is physically unable to perform the role, hence abdication may be considered as an option. Or if they bring the monarchy into disrepute, for example through some kind of personal scandal, and therefore essentially ‘resign’ and pass on the role of [the] monarch in the hope that it will ensure the survival of the crown.”

He furthered:

“If she was to become very unwell, it might be that Elizabeth II essentially ‘retires’ from all public roles, handing over power and leadership of the monarchy to her successor as part of what is termed a ‘regency.’ There is more recent precedent for this going back to the late 18th Century when George III’s eldest son ruled as his proxy due to the monarch’s ill health.”

Earlier this month, British aristocrat Lady Pamela Hicks also suggested that Queen Elizabeth is very unlikely to abdicate. She stated:

“Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands abdicated to her daughter [in 1948], but the Queen was shocked by the idea, because she never can, because she has been anointed and takes her religion very seriously.”

Despite this, royal followers have seen a gradual decline in Queen Elizabeth’s royal duties and engagements in the last few years. Charles: The Man Who Will Be King author Howard Hodgson told Express UK:

“The power behind the throne, for a long time now, has been the Prince of Wales and not anyone else. Until maybe ten years ago, the Duke of Edinburgh had a lot of say in these things.”

Though there have been claims that Queen Elizabeth is stepping down any time soon due to health concerns, it seems she is unlikely to abdicate and, instead, remain the monarch until her last breath.

Queen Elizabeth Death Rumors Spread Like Wildfire

The report, written by its founder Jason Lee, read:

“Sources close to the Royal kingdom notified us exclusively that #QueenElizabeth has passed away. She was scheduled to attend the wedding of British Vogue editor Edward Enninful, but was found dead. Story developing.”

Devoted supporters of Queen Elizabeth were shocked upon reading the news. However, Dayo Okewale, chief of staff in the House of Lords, made it clear that the report about the monarch’s demise was not true.

Queen Elizabeth and the rest of the royal family have yet to comment on the death rumors. This is not the first time that Her Majesty became a victim of a death hoax.

In 2016, two fake Twitter accounts claimed that Queen Elizabeth had died at the age of 90. Hundreds of users retweeted the said post before Twitter shut it down. The reports have been dismissed as completely untrue.
