Queen Elizabeth met her great-granddaughter, Lilibet, for the first time during her Platinum Jubilee. The 1-year-old also celebrated her birthday in the United Kingdom, but it’s unclear if the Queen was there to celebrate with the Sussexes and their friends.
But unlike her older brother, Archie, Lilibet didn’t pose for photos with Queen Elizabeth during her recent visit. While it’s possible for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to have taken snaps of Her Majesty with their daughter, these were not shared with the world.
Queen Elizabeth, Lilibet Didn’t Release A Photo During Their First Meeting
“My point is, in simply going back to the UK together, Harry and Meghan’s very presence was always going to be something of a distraction. So, why not use it to Buckingham Palace’s advantage? I reckon courtiers and aides have really missed a trick here. Imagine if we had seen this photo of the [sic] queen and Lili — it would have been a powerful checkmate on the part of Her Majesty in the PR chess match which the Sussexes seem intent on playing with the Palace,” Esler said (via Cheat Sheet).
Queen Elizabeth Missed An Opportunity To Show She’s Still In Control
Esler added that if a photo of the Queen and Lilibet had been released, this would’ve shown that the royal family was still in control. And it would’ve also sent the message that they are reclaiming the narrative and taking command of the situation. But what happened was that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex still called the shots.
The royal commentator also said that the photo would’ve signaled a checkmate between the royal family and the Sussexes. And it would’ve also depicted the Queen as the bigger person.
“No matter the prime-time sins of Lili’s parents, the [sic] queen was, and would always be, a doting great-grandmother,” Esler said.
Queen Elizabeth Refused Prince Harry, Meghan Markle’s Request To Pose With Lilibet
However, The Sun claimed that Prince Harry and Markle asked the Queen to take photos with their daughter, but the monarch refused.
“Harry and Meghan wanted their photographer to capture the moment Lilibet met the Queen. But they were told no chance. It was a private family meeting,” the source said.
According to Style Caster, Prince Charles, Prince William, and Kate Middleton didn’t also have the chance to pose for photos with Lilibet at her birthday party. After all, they skipped the celebration because of their royal engagements.
However, Prince Charles still made sure to send Lilibet a special gift, which is a swing set that’s exactly like the one he gave to Prince William and Middleton’s children years ago.
