Princess Diana Thought King Charles Was Joking When He Proposed To Her?
For instance, the mom of two admitted that she thought King Charles was joking when he proposed to her. And when she realized that he was really asking for her hand in marriage, Princess Diana professed her love to the new king. However, his response was quite shocking.
"I went to Windsor and I arrived about 5 o'clock and he sat me down and said: 'I've missed you so much.' But there was never anything tactile about him. Anyway, so he said: 'Will you marry me?' and I laughed. I remember thinking: 'This is a joke,' and I said: 'Yeah, OK,' and laughed," Princess Diana told Morton (via Business Insider).

Princess Diana Knew She Would Never Be Queen Immediately After King Charles Proposed To Her?
King Charles reportedly did not go down on one knee when he proposed to Princess Diana. And the special moment took place inside the nursery at Windsor Castle.
Shortly after the proposal, the tone in King Charles' voice shifted, and he told Princess Diana that marrying him meant that she would be queen one day. However, the late royal reportedly knew in her heart that this day would never come.
"He was deadly serious. He said: 'You do realize that one day you will be Queen.' And a voice said to me inside: 'You won't be Queen but you'll have a tough role,'" she said.
Princess Diana Heard King Charles' Controversial Statement 'Whatever Love Means' Twice?
After Princess Diana agreed to wed King Charles, she couldn't contain her excitement, so she kept telling him how much she loved him. Instead of replying to her with I love you, King Charles reportedly told Prince William and Prince Harry's mom, "Whatever love means."
King Charles used the exact same statement during his and Princess Diana's engagement interview in 1981. At the time, the interviewer asked Princess Diana and King Charles if they were in love, and the former said, "of course." The latter, on the other hand, said, "whatever love means."
Princess Diana laughed after hearing King Charles' response, but the latter did say that the phrase "in love" can be interpreted in many ways.
But in the 2017 documentary Diana: In Her Own Words, a recording of Princess Diana revealed her real feelings about King Charles' statement.
"Charles turned around and said, 'Whatever in love means,' and that threw me completely. I thought, 'What a strange question — uh, answer.' God, absolutely traumatized me," she said (via Harper's Bazaar).
