Princess Charlotte, the only daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, will one day inherit Princess Anne’s Princess Royal title. However, the young royal will only be able to start using the moniker following Princess Anne’s death.

Princess Charlotte Will Inherit Princess Anne’s Princess Royal Title Someday

Royal expert Duncan Larcombe confirmed the news during his conversation with Town & Country. He said that Princess Charlotte is the rightful owner of the royal title because it belongs to the eldest daughter of the monarch. But if Princess Anne is still alive when Prince William becomes king, she would have to wait to inherit the title.

Only Princess Anne’s demise will pave the way for Princess Charlotte to be known as the new Princess Royal.

Prince William Will Decide When To Bestow Princess Charlotte With Her New Royal Title

Larcombe also said that Prince William would decide when to give the title to his only daughter. As for Princess Anne, she waited 21 years before Queen Elizabeth bestowed her the title.

“Princess Anne had to wait until 1987 before her mother, the Queen, bestowed the title of Princess Royal on her. Even though the title had been vacant since 1965,” he said (via Cheat Sheet).

Before Princess Anne, the Princess Royal title belonged to Princess Mary, the eldest daughter of King George V and Queen Mary.

Meanwhile, Larcombe also talked about the repercussions of Princess Charlotte’s future royal title. He said that as the future Princess Royal, Princess Charlotte isn’t allowed to be intimate with anyone until after they are married.

“Under ancient British law, any man who sleeps with Princess Royal before they are married is guilty of high treason—punishable by execution! Perhaps Princess Charlotte’s future boyfriends had better look out. At the very least, Wills and Kate are likely to wait until after Charlotte marries before giving her the title,” he said.

Last month, Princess Charlotte also made headlines following the release of her uncle Harry’s memoir Spare. In his book, the Duke of Sussex shared some of his concerns involving Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Since Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are not the future Queen and king of Britain, Prince Harry thinks that one or both of them could grow up as spare just like him.

But when he told Prince William about his worries, the heir to the throne reportedly told his royal brother that his children are not his responsibility.

“Though William and I have talked about it once or twice, and he has made it very clear to me that his kids are not my responsibility, I still feel a responsibility knowing that out of those three children, at least one will end up like me, the spare,” Prince Harry said (via Marca).

Growing up, the Duke of Sussex was referred to as the spare while Prince William was dubbed the heir.
