The service of thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey, on Tuesday, was a much bigger event. Buckingham Palace even revealed that the grandmother of Princess Beatrice, Queen Elizabeth, had been actively involved in its planning.

The Princess of York recycled her glamorous fitted "Beatrice" coat dress from Nonoo Lyons and plush velvet heels from Gianvito Rossi. Princess Beatrice completed her look with a striking detail on the shoulders, a gathered waistline, and statement bell sleeves.

However, the most striking element of Princess Beatrice's ensemble was the oversized burgundy headband layered with maroon-colored flowers and an elegant facial veil. Most, if not all, royal fans are aware that facial veils are traditionally associated with a gesture of sorrow, respect, and piety.

In royal tradition, black veils are only worn at the funeral of a sovereign. Queen Elizabeth, her mother, grandmother Princess Mary, and Princess Margaret all appeared in long black veils at King George VI's state funeral in 1952.

The service of thanksgiving for Prince Philip was neither a funeral nor was he a sovereign, which means the sophisticated fashion statement of Princess Beatrice went against the grain of royal fashion tradition. However, it is also likely that the Princess of York added a facial veil as a nod to royal tradition that she may have chosen to adopt as a sign of respect.
