Princess Anne and Princess Diana never had the opportunity to be close. In fact, a royal expert said that the two women’s differences didn’t work in their favor.

According to Chris Hutchins, Princess Anne was a no-nonsense outdoorswoman who didn’t care about the things that interested Princess Diana.

Royal expert Ingrid Seward added that Princess Anne was always indifferent to her sister-in-law. In fact, Princess Royal treated Princess Diana with withering disdain and even referred to her as a silly girl.

Princess Diana Was Intimated By Princess Anne

New Idea, in its Jan. 10 issue, recently shed more light on Princess Anne and Princess Diana’s strained relationship. The publication claimed Princess Anne and Princess Diana never took to each other because the latter was intimidated by the former.

Shortly after Prince Charles and Princess Diana tied the knot, there was some expectation that the future king would be the one to help bridge the gap between his sister and wife. However, he never exerted an effort for the two women to become close.

Princess Diana Didn’t Ask Princess Anne To Be Her Sons’ Godmother

What further strained Princess Anne and Princess Diana's relationship was the latter’s decision to not name the former as the godmother of Prince William and Prince Harry.

A source said that Prince Charles promised Princess Anne that she would be Prince Harry’s godmother since she wasn’t selected as Prince William’s godparent. But when the day came, the important role was given to Princess Diana’s best friend.

Princess Anne Thrilled Over Prince Charles, Princess Diana’s Divorce

Years later, Prince Charles and Princess Diana announced their decision to go their separate ways. And the unnamed source claimed that Princess Anne couldn’t be more thrilled.

“Anne was glad she wouldn’t have to put on fake friendliness and deal with what she called the tedium of Diana’s mood swings,” the unnamed source said.

Princess Anne Devastated Following Princess Diana’s Death

A year later, Princess Anne was shocked and speechless after learning that Princess Diana passed away following a fatal car crash.

“Anne’s not one for shows of emotion. She’s like her mother in that way. But Diana’s death really got to her. Deep down she did regret not making more of an effort with her. Most people knew they weren’t on great terms, so the mourning period and funeral afterward was tough on Anne,” the unnamed source explained.

Princess Anne Has Some Regrets

And just last year, Princess Anne reportedly felt guiltier after learning the truth about Princess Diana’s interview with Martin Bashir.

After the interview aired in 1995, Princess Anne allegedly blamed Princess Diana for destroying the royal family’s reputation.

“Like most of the royals at the time, Anne was very disgruntled by Diana going on-air and talking about how she had depression and how awful it was for her to be part of the family. She thought it was a big plea for public sympathy,” the source said.

Years later, the royal family found out that Bashir forced Princess Diana to open up about her struggles after he threatened to expose her.

“But when it all came out that Diana had been conned, and how miserable she truly was, Anne was devastated. She worries that she failed Diana, who could have used a strong woman to support her,” the unnamed source explained.

Even though Princess Anne knows that Princess Diana was not her responsibility, she still couldn’t help but blame herself for not reaching out to her sister-in-law.

“Diana never asked for her help, either. It all could have been done with a little more communication between them both. If it had all turned out differently and Charles and Diana had worked, there’s no doubt Anne and Diana would have become close. Anne is far too dedicated to the monarchy to not serve the Queen, which Diana would have become,” the unnamed source concluded.

Princess Anne, Princess Diana Disliked Each Other

In the documentary Paxman on the Queen’s Children, Richard Kay said that Princess Anne never had time for her sister-in-law.

“She didn’t like the way [Diana] went about her duty and the way she used the cameras and the media to promote herself, in her eyes. Anne had a much more traditional approach to monarchy and royal duty,” Kay said.

While it is that Princess Anne and Princess Diana were never close, there’s no proof that the former felt bad after learning the truth about the latter’s interview with Bashir.
