Prince William is, undeniably, a king in waiting. Being the eldest son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, the husband of Kate Middleton has been second in the line of succession to the British throne after his father.
Aside from carrying the Duke of Cambridge title, Prince William is also a proud father of three doting royal children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Though Queen Elizabeth’s reign continues and he is not the heir apparent, the older brother of Prince Harry has been representing the British monarch in numerous royal events and engagements for quite some time now.
Recently, Prince William has carried out a historic role on behalf of Queen Elizabeth for the very first time on Wednesday, May 18. Keep on reading to know more details.
Queen Elizabeth Hands Prince William A Historic New Role
Express U.K. reported Prince William, in his position as Colonel of the Irish Guards, presented new colors to the military unit to “rightly celebrate [their] many achievements” at Windsor Castle today on behalf of Queen Elizabeth.
The colors are symbolic as they constitute a regiment’s honor and represent its devotion to duty, and traditionally, the presentation includes a parade and an inspection by Her Majesty or any member of the royal family, who may also give a short message.
Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, or Prince Edward previously presented colors to the military units. In his message at today’s presentation, Prince William stated:
“I am speaking to those Guardsmen, and indeed every one of you assembled here today when I say that I am immensely proud of what you have achieved. The indomitable family spirit of the Micks remains your hallmark, and I know that the support and devotion of the Regimental family remain as strong as ever.”
The husband of Kate Middleton, per People, also said:
"In this historic Platinum Jubilee year, we rightly celebrate your many achievements. I know that Her Majesty is looking forward to seeing these new colors trooped during Her Official Birthday Parade next month. I also know they will inspire you and your successors to emulate the deeds of the Irish Guardsmen who have gone before as you continue to serve our Nation, in conflict or in peace, at home and abroad. The thoughts and prayers of my own family, which enjoys a close and proud connection with the Irish Guards, will be with you as you set about this most important task."
Following his message, the soldiers gave out a resounding “Three Cheers” for Queen Elizabeth, followed by the same for Prince William. The better half of Kate Middleton sat with the regiment’s senior and warrant officers for a photograph after the ceremony. He then spent some time with the regiments and their families.
The Irish Guards, per reports, would troop their colors at Queen Elizabeth’s official birthday parade on June 2, which officially kicks off the monarch’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. At the annual parade in central London, the 1st battalion of the Irish Guards would troop their color.
For starters, Prince William was appointed Colonel of the Irish Guards in 2011 and takes part in the presentation of new colors. The Duke of Cambridge and Kate Middleton also attend the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and parade at their base annually.
