Prince William and Kate Middleton are in the United States for a series of royal engagements. This week, they attended a basketball game between the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat, where they were welcomed with some cheers and boos from the crowd.
Initially, some royal fans thought that Prince William and Kate Middleton were being booed amid allegations of racism by Queen Elizabeth’s former lady-in-waiting, Lady Sarah Hussey. However, this wasn’t the case.
Why Prince William And Kate Middleton Were Booed At The Basketball Game
Mirror UK spoke to some of the basketball fans that booed the Prince and Princess of Wales to know why exactly they did what they did when their image was shown on the big screen.
“Yeah, we booed. To let you guys know you’re in the U S [expletive] A,” two Boston Celtics fans said.
“I don’t know why people booed. It seemed pretty weird. Perhaps it’s because we are a rich Irish heritage and they are British, people don’t normally boo whoever is on the screen like that,” another fan said.
“I’ve no idea who they are, but someone on my row said they knew them as the British royals. It wasn’t full-on booing anyway, just a few people shouting off, I don’t know why,” a third person added.

Prince William And Kate Middleton Booed Due To Boston Celtics Team’s Rich Irish Heritage?
Other Celtics fans pointed to the team’s rich Irish heritage as the reason why Prince William and Middleton were booed. After all, they are British, and there are some tensions between Britain and Ireland.
In fact, the Princess of Wales was also heckled by an Irish native when she and Prince William visited Northern Ireland weeks ago. But as an experienced royal, Middleton handled the awkward moment with grace, according to Page Six.
Prince William’s Godmother, Lady Sarah Hussey, Accused Of Racism?
According to TIME, the booing may also have to do with Hussey’s alleged racist conduct, which forced the 83-year-old to resign from her post just hours before Prince William and Middleton made an appearance at the basketball game.
Hussey reportedly asked Ngozi Fulani, a Black British charity worker, where she really came from multiple times.
During her interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today show, Fulani detailed her exchange with Hussey and said that it was a violation and an interrogation. After all, she repeatedly told Hussey that she’s British, but the latter still continued to ask where she was really from.
“I have to really question how this can happen in a space that’s supposed to protect women against all kinds of violence,” Fulani said.
