Prince Philip used to be very fond of Princess Diana. In fact, the Duke of Edinburgh continued to favor the Princess of Wales over Camilla Parker Bowles even after Prince William and Prince Harry’s parents separated. And Prince Philip’s fondness for Princess Diana became evident early on.
Prince Philip Urged Prince Charles To Wed Princess Diana
In the documentary Charles & Camilla: King and Queen in Waiting, Prince Philip was the one that convinced Prince Charles to wed Princess Diana instead of Camilla. The late royal saw the Princess of Wales as a more suitable partner for his eldest son because she had never been in a relationship.
While speaking in the documentary, royal journalist Jennie Bond revealed that Prince Philip gave Prince Charles an ultimatum to wed Princess Diana.
“He was given — more or less — an ultimatum by his father, to either marry Diana or let her go,” Bond said.
Prince Charles, Princess Diana’s Relationship Didn’t Last Long
Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s tumultuous relationship started shortly after the funeral of Lord Mountbatten. During their conversation, the Princess of Wales shared with Prince Charles her observations.
“Charles had been very, very upset. Diana said to Charles, 'I saw you at that funeral and you looked so terribly sad, and he was very touched by this. There was this beautiful, young girl showing him attention. Clearly, he felt a lot of responsibility to fulfill what was necessary as the heir to the throne and get married. He thought she was the kind of girl he could grow to love,” Bond explained.
Royal author Katie Nicholl added that Prince Charles became drawn to Princess Diana in the beginning because she ticked all the boxes.
“Diana ticked all the boxes, she didn't have any baggage. She hadn't had any relationships really before meeting Prince Charles,” Nicholl said.
However, it didn’t take Prince Charles and Princess Diana long to realize that they were so different from each other. And these differences proved that they were not compatible.
In the end, Prince Charles returned to his one true love, Camilla Parker Bowles. And the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall could’ve gotten back together much earlier if not for Prince Philip. After all, he was the one that convinced Prince Charles to date Princess Diana.
Prince Philip, Princess Diana Exchanged Handwritten Letters
Following their split, Prince Philip and Princess Diana wrote letters to each other. And in one of his handwritten notes, the former made it clear that he won’t tolerate what Prince Charles and Princess Diana did. The exes reportedly cheated on each other.
“We do not approve of either of you having lovers. Charles was silly to risk everything with Camilla for a man in his position. We never dreamed he might feel like leaving you for her. I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind leaving you for Camilla. Such a prospect never even entered our heads,” Prince Philip wrote to Princess Diana.
Princess Diana responded to Prince Philip’s letter by saying that she was grateful for his support. The late royal also called the Duke of Edinburgh “pa” in her note.
“Dearest Pa, I was particularly touched by your most recent letter, which proved to me, if I did not already know it, that you really do care. You are very modest about your marriage guidance skills, and I disagree with you!” Princess Diana wrote.
However, royal biographer Andrew Morton wrote in the book Diana, Her True Story – In Her Own Words that Prince Philip and Princess Diana didn’t always have a wonderful relationship with each other. There were also times wherein Queen Elizabeth’s late husband blamed Princess Diana for the fallout of her marriage to Prince Charles.
