Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles’ relationship had a rocky start because not everyone approved of the latter for the future king. So, after Prince Charles joined the military in the 1970s, he found out that Camilla Parker Bowles tied the knot with another man. A couple of years later, Prince Charles ended up marrying the late Princess Diana.
But even while Prince Charles was still married to the Princess of Wales, he already had an affair with Camilla. And a few years after Princess Diana died, he and Camilla decided to make things official.
Queen Mother Disliked Camilla Parker Bowles For Prince Charles
According to royal author Katie Nicholl, the heir to the throne wanted everyone to approve of Camilla. But Prince Charles was especially hopeful that his grandmother, the Queen Mother would accept his then-future wife. After all, Prince Charles and the Queen Mother were very close.
In the documentary Charles & Camilla: King and Queen in Waiting, Nicholl revealed that Prince Charles never got the Queen Mother’s approval even though the former and Camilla knew that they were perfect for each other.
“They clicked immediately. There was a chemistry between the two of them and really, I think probably Charles fell in love with Camilla from the moment that he met her. In many ways, she did tick the right boxes for a future consort for the Prince of Wales. It’s fair to say that the senior royals and certainly the important figures in Charles’ life — his mother, his father, and the Queen Mother, who Charles was incredibly close to, he always turned to for advice and would certainly have wanted the seal of approval from — they certainly didn’t think that she was suitable royal bride material,” Nicholl said.

So, without the Queen Mother and Prince Philip’s approval, Prince Charles and Camilla had no other choice but to go their separate ways. They eventually found their way back to each other, but things were never easy for the couple.
“The heir to the throne nearly always was encouraged to go for a wife who was whiter than white. And it was viewed very much that Camilla did have too much of a colorful past and therefore was too much of a potential embarrassment.,” royal journalist Emily Andrews said.

But over the years, the royal family’s perception of Camilla changed. Unfortunately, the Queen Mother is no longer around to witness it all. Just last month, Queen Elizabeth even made a rare request for Camilla to be styled as queen consort when Prince Charles ascends the throne.
This came as a surprise to royal experts and royal fans because everyone thought that Camilla would be styled as a princess consort.
“When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service,” Queen Elizabeth said during her Platinum Jubilee statement.
Prince Charles’ Wife Camilla Parker Bowles Will Be Styled As Queen Consort
According to People, "queen consort" is the traditional title for the wife of the reigning monarch. But Clarence House claimed years ago that Camila will be styled as princess consort as a sign of respect for the late Princess Diana.
The publication also claimed that Camilla would most likely be styled as Queen Camilla even if her official role is queen consort. After all, Queen Elizabeth’s late mother was also styled in a similar manner after King George VI ascended the throne.
She later became the Queen Mother after Queen Elizabeth was crowned as the head of the British monarchy.
