  • Quick Answer: Peter Capaldi believes frequent regenerations have diminished the concept's mystery, while the BBC confirmed the Christmas special is canceled, but the series is not.

Doctor Who veteran Peter Capaldi has shared his thoughts on what he sees as the diminishing impact of regenerations, one of the long-running BBC series's most integral concepts.

Capaldi portrayed the Twelfth Doctor from 2014 to 2017 and has since returned for several cameos and specials.

With the show now on an indefinite hiatus and being put out to tender for new production companies following the departures of Russell T Davies and the Bad Wolf production team, what does Capaldi have to say about the state of Doctor Who and its iconic regeneration process?

Regeneration is the process by which the Doctor cheats death when fatally injured or severely aged. It is also when every cell in the body is revitalized, resulting in a change in physical appearance and personality, introducing a new incarnation of the Doctor.

In fact, after Capaldi’s time as the Twelfth Doctor, he regenerated into Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor.

However, as time has passed, the 68-year-old actor believes the concept of regeneration has already “diminished.”

“To be perfectly honest, I think there are too many regenerations,” he said on 100 Questions with Tom Simmons podcast. “I love all the Doctors, but I've lost count now of how many of them there are, so the weight of this kind of regeneration is diminished.”

So far, Doctor Who has featured 15 official main incarnations of the Doctor, though over 30 different actors have played the role across TV, film, and audio dramas due to multiple spin-offs, special regenerations, and returning actors.

This includes William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant (who returned for the 2023 specials), Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, Jodie Whittaker, and Ncuti Gatwa.

“Whereas when I grew up as a kid, the first time it happened it was: ‘What just happened there?’” he continued. “It was mysterious and strange. It held the mystery of the show—the regeneration.”

By the looks of it, Capaldi feels regeneration has lost some of its earlier allure compared to its early depictions in Doctor Who. However, he still acknowledges it remains a “powerful death motif” and “magical.”

Doctor Who

The BBC announced last week that it has canceled the Doctor Who Christmas Special and is ending its partnership with showrunner Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf, effectively opening the show to negotiations with other producers.

While this move appears to follow long-standing rumors and ongoing production delays, it does not mean the series has been canceled entirely.

Doctor Who has not been canceled,” Steven Moffat said at the Utopia 2026 convention over the weekend. “Yes, Christmas has been canceled. Well, to be clear, not all of Christmas—the day will still take place, even if Doctor Who is not on it.”

Although Moffat himself dislikes the idea of not having a Doctor Who Christmas Special, he assured fans that the show will return “very, very definitely.”

The BBC had previously announced the upcoming Christmas special last year, continuing the show’s long-standing annual tradition. However, despite its cancellation, the BBC stressed that it would not be axing the series entirely.

“This decision was not taken lightly,” the announcement reads. “We know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one-off special, we are choosing to push forward and invest in the long-term future of the show, which ensures that when the TARDIS lands once more, it does so in all its glory.”
