To be fair, despite the mixed reception of having Billie Piper's Doctor Who return as a Time Lord, it made perfect sense for the Doctor to regenerate himself into the visage of one of the most iconic and dearest traveling companions he's ever had.
The problem lies in Doctor Who's growing tendency to rely heavily on nostalgia just to keep churning out more episodes of one of the longest-running fantasy sci-fi shows today, rather than mapping out a stable, long-term plan for the franchise in expanding its universe.
With Gatwa out and the high-budget Disney era officially at an end, the BBC is looking at a massive uphill battle. Billie Piper's return was only meant to be a brief, transitional event, after all, and is currently tied to filming Wednesday season 3.
