Outer Banks, the American action-adventure mystery teen drama, became a huge hit on Netflix when the first season premiered last year, and it quickly made it to the top of Netflix's U.S. charts when Season 2 premiered in July 2021. According to the Nielsen's report of viewership from August 9 through August 15, the sophomore season of the show became the most viewed with 1,160 million views; now, fans are wondering if the streaming giant has plans to release more episodes in the near future.
Set in a fictional coastal town of North Carolina, where there is a stark social divide between wealthy seasonal residents and working-class locals (who have the nicknames "Kooks" and "Pogues", respectively), Outer Banks follows a group of Pogue teens who are on a quest to find the legendary treasure tied to John B's missing father.
Those who have seen all ten available episodes know that more things come into play, and that the finale of Season 2 didn't wrap up the entire story, so fans are looking forward to find out if Netflix will confirm a third season, and when the new episodes could potentially be released.
Here's everything you need to know about Outer Banks Season 3.
Warning: Spoilers ahead, including the ending of Season 2.
Outer Banks Season 3 Release Date: Will Netflix release more episodes?
Netflix hasn't confirmed a new season for Outer Banks Season 3 yet, but fans would be surprised if it won't get a renewal given that the show sat in Netflix's U.S. Top 10 charts this summer. Based on Season 2's ratings and steady rise on the streaming charts, it seems like it's a given that Netflix will announce a renewal soon.
Showrunner Jonas Pate previously talked about how he envisioned Outer Banks to have around four to five seasons, but it's up to Netflix to make the ultimate decision to greenlight new episodes for the popular American teen drama.
According to a report by Small Screen, one person involved in the show told the outlet that they "cannot confirm nor deny what's happening with OB S3. What I will say is that S3 won't come out this year."
Despite rumors including the one that was shared on Facebook saying that Outer Banks has been cancelled, we're still yet to officially hear what's in store for the series moving forward.
According to the post (which comes from a page not affiliated with Netflix), “Outer Banks is officially cancelled by Netflix after season 2, according to Netflix the second season didn’t give the return they wanted.”.
According to the post (which comes from a page unaffiliated with Netflix) they said: “Outer Banks is officially cancelled by Netflix after season 2, according to Netflix the second season didn’t give the return they wanted.” We’ve reached out to the page but as our friends at Netflix Life indicate, it should be disregarded.
If Netflix confirms a third season, the new episodes probably won't be released until mid-2022 at the earliest. Season 2 was released in July 2021, just over a year after Season 1 was released in April 2020, so it's likely that Season 3 will be released around summer next year at the earliest.
In September 2021, a report from Small Screen claims that an anonymous source involved in the production of Outer Banks Season 3 said that the third season will most likely arrive in the middle of 2022, if things go accoridng to plan. The unconfirmed source also mentioned that the script for Season 4 is already being written.
Netflix could renew Outer Banks at any moment now. There's clearly more story to tell for this fan-favorite action-adventure series, so expect the streaming giant to announce its renewal soon. It's likely that the new season will have a total of ten new episodes just like the previous seasons of the show.
Sadly, Outer Banks Season 3 was not confirmed at the Netflix TUDUM global fan event, but expect that Netflix will officially renew the series by the end of this year.
Outer Banks Season 3 Cast: Who will return, and who are the newcomers?
Fans can expect the Pogue members to return:
Chase Stokes as John B. Routledge
Madelyn Cline as Sarah Cameron
Madison Bailey as Kiara "Kie" Carrera
Jonathan Daviss as Pope Heyward
Rudy Pankow as JJ Maybank
Carlacia Grant as Cleo
Other cast members expected to return are Charles Esten (Ward), Drew Starkey (Rafe), Julia Antonelli (Wheezie), Caroline Arapoglou (Rose), Austin North (Topper), Elizabeth Mitchell (Carla Limbrey), Samantha Soule (Anna Carrera), Gary Weeks (Luke), and Charles Halford (Big John, John B.'s father).
Since Netflix hasn't confirmed a third season yet, no new cast announcements have been made, but expect new characters to be introduced if the company gives Outer Banks Season 3 a green light.
Outer Banks Season 3 Plot: John B.'s father is alive! But how will the Pogues get the treasures?
Obviously, no plot details have officially been revealed for a possible third season of Outer Banks since it hasn't been confirmed yet, but let's take a look at the Season 2 finale to speculate how Season 3 will continue the adventures of the Pogues.
The finale of Outer Banks Season 2 was a shocker. It was revealed that John B.'s father, Big John, is still alive, in hiding. Many assumed he was dead after it was revealed that Ward killed him in the middle of the sea after failing to agree with the cut of the gold from the Royal Merchant. The scene showed him asking Carla Limbrey to help his son. It's likely that John B. will reunite with his father in Season 3.
The Pogues had lost their gold cross to Sarah's family, the Camerons, but they managed to escape the cargo ship. They settled in a deserted island somewhere in the Carribean, calling it "Poguelandia", and it looks like they haven't given up on getting the gold and the cross back from the Camerons.
It's also likely that we will see John B. and Sarah's relationship develop further, and we might also see Kiara, Pope, JJ, and Cleo build their own romantic relationships. We might also see the gang return to their hometown in North Carolina, but they will surely be focused on their quest to get the treasures back.
It's still unclear how John B's father and Carla Limbrey will help John B. and his friends get the treasure, but the potential plot developments look promising.
In an interview with EW, showrunner Josh Pate confirmed that "John B's relationship with his dad is a huge theme [to shape Season 3]."
"Having his dad back around and eventually they're going to meet back up and John B has to reconcile his idealised version of his dead dad with the reality of his alive dad," Pate added. "It gives us a lot of thematic father-son stuff to work with."
Writer Shannon Burke added,"It's going to be instrumental and maybe the spine [of Season 3] basically. It's obviously a gigantic revelation that's going to power a huge part of the third season."
Pate also teased that Season 3 will have more romance compared to Season 2. "That was one thing we really loved about season 1 that's less of an element of season 2 that we really want to get back to," Pate told EW. "That was the plan, kind of architecting the characters towards opening up some romances in season 3."
Chase Stokes, who plays John B, also talked about what this revelation may mean for his character in Season 3.
Speaking to TV Line, Stokes said that he is "hoping to continue to tell the story for a couple more seasons", adding: "It wasn't like he [Big John] was swept away by a natural disaster or whatever the case may be. It was his choice to go out and leave his son, and what does that look like? What does it look like when a kid comes face-to-face with a parent who's left and chose to put him in these circumstances and has no idea what has happened in the meantime?"
Since the script for Outer Banks Season 4 is said to be in the works, it's likely that Season 3 will open new plot lines.
