New Spider-Man PS4 Game To Depict More Experienced Web-Crawler, Won't Be Tied To Movie

When Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac Games revealed its upcoming Spider-Man game for the Playstation 4 at E3, some fans wondered if it has any connection to Marvel and Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming. On the Playstation's E3 show, Bryan Intihar of Insomniac and Bill Rosemann from Marvel revealed that the game is not tied to next year's Spider-Man film at all, saying that the game will instea depict an older and more experienced Spider-Man.

"It's standalone," Rosemann confirmed. "I think we've been inspired by all the different mediums that Marvel has, whether it's film, animation, live-action, comic books, even t-shirts. So we're looking at everything and we're blending it all together. But it's standalone; all new story, all new world. We're always stretching, we're always challenging, we're always moving the characters forward."

Intihar said: "For me, it's about respecting the traditions of the franchise but mixing things up.". He said that he s "surprised" by the amount of freedom Insomnicac has to do what it wants for the game.

Intihar also discussed how the new Spider-Man game will feature an older and more experienced Spider-Man/Peter Parker, who's "someone who's been doing this for more than a couple of years; we want to make sure his fighting style reflects that," Inthihar explained. "To us, Peter is as important as the Spider-Man character."

"We're going to push him in some areas, whether it's traversal, whether it's fighting, whether it's just open world exploration," he explained. "Peter is a really smart guy. How does that tie into his life not just as Peter Parker but when he brings [his intelligence] to the fight?"

Insomniac hasn't revealed specific details about gameplay elements for the new Spider-Man game yet, but Inithar teased that Parker's intelligence will inform how he moves through the world.

"We're going to push him in some areas, whether it's traversal, whether it's fighting, whether it's just open world exploration," he explained. "Peter is a really smart guy. How does that tie into his life not just as Peter Parker but when he brings [his intelligence] to the fight?"

The new Spider-Man game doesn't have a release date yet.

Spider-Man: Homecoming, starring Tom Holland will be released in theaters on July 7, 2017. That film depicts a 15-year-old Peter Parker.
