New Doctor Who Spinoff Series Reportedly in the Works Ahead of 60th Anniversary Special

There is no denying that Doctor Who is one of the longest-running science fiction series on television, and now that the new and upcoming Doctor Who Season 14 is set to debut Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa as the 14th Doctor and first Black actor to be included in the series, a new report emerges indicating that the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Specials are not where the Doctor Who spinoffs stop.

Deadline reports that BBC is reportedly creating another Doctor Who spinoff series, this time, centered around the military research organization, UNIT, which has been a part of the Whoniverse since its appearance in 1968. To be more specific, when Jon Pertwee’s Doctor was taken in as a scientific advisor after he had been exiled by the Time Lords to Earth.

The spinoff will see the return of Jemma Redgrave, who plays the daughter of Brigadier Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge Stewart (one of the founders of UNIT), Kate Stewart, in which the spinoff will be focusing on her running the UNIT.

Doctor Who specials and spinoffs aren’t exactly new in the Whoniverse, especially since two-time series showrunner Russell T. Davies rebooted the series back in 2005 and developed a couple of spinoffs namely, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Chronicles. So, a UNIT-centered spinoff wouldn’t be far-fetched.

Given the exceeding amount of seasons, specials, and spinoffs Doctor Who has received under his care, Davies did campaign for the scifi series’ own channel, similarly to how Disney, Star Wars, Marvel, and other popular franchises earned theirs, too:

“There should be a Doctor Who channel by now,” Davies told on Radio Times in 2021, “You look at those Disney announcements, of all those new Star Wars and Marvel shows, you think, we should be sitting here announcing The Nyssa Adventures or The Return of Donna Noble, and you should have the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors together in a 10-part series.”

Doctor Who returns this year with its 60th anniversary specials, while Doctor Who Season 14 will be seeing the debut of Ncuti Gatwa in 2024.
