Neil Patrick Harris Refuses Appearing In How I Met Your Father Due To Barney’s Antics: Here’s How He Can Possibly Join Hillary Duff Series

How I Met Your Father has officially started and is now on its fourth episode. Now that the show is halfway through its ending, will fans get the chance to see the famous How I Met Your Mother dad Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris)?

The answer is no. Harris himself strongly believed his character’s antics would not work out in How I Met Your Father. So how could he possibly make an appearance? Read this.

Harris’ Character Problem in How I Met Your Father

The actor interviewed Hillary Duff In the latest installment of his Wondercade newsletter. Here, the How I Met Your Father lead star asked him if he would consider reprising his iconic role in the sequel.

Amid the #MeToo era and knowing Barney’s antics, Harris perfectly knew the answer.

“As for coming on your show (insert joke here), I worry,” he said, viaTVLine. “Barney’s antics, his overt delusions of grandeur, would likely get everyone in trouble. So, unless he’s changed his ways or joined a nunnery (insert an insert joke here), not sure if it’s in anyone’s best interest.”

Duff agreed that all the scam, hustle, gambit, and other questionable moves Barney did to “wine, dine and score with women” back then would seriously land him behind bars if he made it today.

“I’m not sure how you feel about this, but I’m pretty sure Barney would… be in jail in 2022,” the Lizzie McGuire star said. “Since we’re living in the world of females coming into power, I’m assuming that’s why they made [Barney-esque character Valentina] a woman!”

Barney’s Antics Won’t Work in How I Met Your Father

Just like other shows back then, How I Met Your Mother has its fair share of questionable scenes. So knowing Barney’s tricks, it will never work in How I Met Your Father today.

With that being said, there is big hesitancy to revive Harris’ iconic character. Now that the actor himself said it wouldn’t work, there might be other ways his character might show up in the series.

Screenrant suggests in between the time of the two shows, Barney may have changed his ways and be more mature. He already had a child when the original series ended, so he might have grown up one way or another.

Hence, How I Met Your Father can introduce “a new and improved” Barney.

There are also theories that he can play as Sophie’s (Duff) father, knowing he has a daughter and can fit in the two storylines. Although it remains to be seen if this will happen, the possibility of it is not far from happening.
