Neil Gaiman never backs down when it comes to responding to haters or online trolls, and now, he is brought again to face The Sandman casting backlash. With that in mind, the author only had one thing to say: “Have you read the comics?”
Speaking with Inverse, Neil Gaiman bluntly says this is how the conversation between him and the series’ haters usually go, depicting how they had not even read the original source material before casting their judgement on the show. Read Gaiman’s full quote below:
“Occasionally, you get people shouting at us for having made up all these gay characters who weren’t in the comics, and then we’d go, ‘Have you read the comics?’ And they’d go, ‘No.’ And we’d go, ‘They were gay in the comics.’”

Gaiman said almost the same thing when people reacted negatively to Lucifer being played by Gwendoline Christie, indicating that people have simply interpreted Lucifer to be a man with male genitalia. In response, Gaiman simply shrugged it off by saying 'perhaps it’s because Christie is taller than the original version.'

“And they’d go ‘You’re just woke and nobody is going to watch your horrible show.’ And then we went Number 1 in the world for four weeks. And they went ‘It’s all bots! We hate you. You’re woke.’ It’s a weird silliness. These complainers don’t like gay people, they don’t like Black people, and they don’t like women. And if you look at their profiles, they don’t like vaccines, they don’t like Democrats, and they’re not big on voting.”
Gaiman had also responded to similar issues like when a Scooby-Doo writer said Velma coming out as a lesbian wasn’t planned, Gaiman had brought in some of the ‘evidence’ indicating Velma’s sexuality early on in the Mystery Gang’s series.
Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman Season 1 is currently streaming on Netflix, with Season 2 yet to be released.
