Among the many romantic-comedy anime of 2022, My Dress-Up Darling stood out among many other rom-coms for one main reason, which the show’s director shared in a recent interview.
Recently, Crunchyroll released an interview with My Dress-Up Darling director Keisuke Shinohara where he shares an interesting insight into the anime’s creation.
He also goes into detail about Marin’s loveable traits along with what makes the anime unique.
My Dress-Up Darling Director on What Makes Marin so Loveable
Marin Kitagawa was one of the stand-out characters of 2022 for many anime fans. Of course, her good looks and awesome cosplays are a big part of her appeal, but the love for her isn’t limited to just visual appeal.
Many consider her the best waifu of 2022 because of her loveable personality. And while other rom-com anime characters may fall into the tsundere archetype, Marin is instead a straightforward character who is confident about herself and other people.
Shinohara goes into detail about this loveable trait of Marin. He says that Marin “has respect for herself, as well as for others which makes her likable.”
He also mentions how Marin has a cute gap between her straightforwardness with most things and her shyness when it comes to romance.
This adorable trait, coupled with how devoted she is to something she wants, gives her ideal qualities to many viewers.
Marin being a loveable character is one of the biggest appeals of the show, but there’s another thing My Dress-Up Darling does that makes it stand out.

What Sets My Dress-Up Darling Apart From Other Rom-Coms
Shinohara noted that, unlike other similar romance series, My Dress-Up Darling has a large female fanbase.
The director attributes this fact in part to the series’ unique premise where it’s the heroine that falls in love with the protagonist first.
Many rom-com anime or manga usually see the protagonist (who is typically a guy) develop feelings first.
But in the series, it’s Marin that gets feelings for Wakana Gojo first. This makes it “easy to read and relate to for female viewers,” says Shinohara.
The fact that Marin falls in love first, coupled with how loveable and great of a character she is, made My Dress-Up Darling an easy fan-favorite not only during the Winter 2022 season but in the whole of 2022 as well.
Given how big of a hit the show’s first season was, it’s no surprise that a sequel was announced.
However, there are not a lot of details yet about the My Dress-Up Darling anime sequel.
