Mulan Live-Action Movie Director Confirms “There Will Be Music”

Last month, Disney fans went crazy when Mulan live-action movie director Niki Caro revealed that the highly anticipated film wouldn't have any of the original animated movie's iconic songs. After receiving major backlash over the song-less Mulan, Caro clarified the comments she gave earlier by saying that no decision has been made on the music of the live-action film.

Now, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Caro decides to give Disney fans an update on Mulan's songs after speaking to the publication about her new film, The Zookeeper's Wife.

When asked whether she feels the pressure to live up to fan's expectations after the backlash she initially received over the possibility of a live-action Mulan striped of its music, Caro responded by saying:

"No, not at all. I mean, I haven't even started on the movie yet. I haven't seen a single casting yet, and these are conversations that are all ongoing. The live-action is based on that inspirational Chinese ballad and on the animated Disney classic. We're still exploring the role that music's going to play in it, but for sure there will be music."

Caro also stressed on the need for cultural authenticity in the film, saying that she plans to work with experts on Chinese culture and history for the Disney movie.

"In all my work that is centered in cultures not my own, I hope that comes through, because that is incredibly important to me. When I made Whale Rider, I saw that to be specific and authentic is to be universal, and I've continued to work in an identical way ever since. As the projects get bigger, the more certain I am that cultural authenticity and specificity is the only way to approach my work."

Though Disney initially intended to make Mulan a kung-fu film without Shang's movitivational "I'll Make A Man Out of You" or the soldier's whimsical "A Girl Worth Fighting For," it seems like the studio caved in to fan's responses. After all, if Beauty and the Beast got its music, then why not Mulan? Guess today's a good day for fans.
