Disney+'s upcoming Ms. Marvel will be Iman Vellani's debut in the MCU, joining the constantly expanding roster of Disney+ standalone shows. Ms. Marvel revolves around Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old Captain Marvel die-hard fan who stumbles upon an artifact that eventually gives her superhuman abilities and turned her into a teenage superhero.

Although most fans are thrilled to meet the new MCU youngster, some fans had issues with how Marvel Studios made a key shift with Kamala's powers origin. In Marvel Comics, Kamala originally has the 'embiggen' herself, allowing herself to enlarge and extend all of her limbs. Kamala also has superhuman healing abilities. However, in the upcoming Disney+ show, Kamala's superpowers appear to originate from a mystical metal wristband that seemingly allows her to somewhat remain true to her source material, as revealed in the trailer, showcasing an enlarged purple fist during a fight scene.

Now, Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani finally breaks the silence on the power’s origin shift fan backlash.

In an interview with SFX Magazine (via TheDirect), Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani finally breaks silence on the recent fan backlash over her character's power origin changes, saying that fans should instead focus on the new MCU superhero's 'self-discovery' journey.

"I’m very possessive [of Kamala]. I think we stay true to what the comics brought,” Vellani said. "The themes have always been about identity and about marrying the 50 million things that make Kamala. For all I care, she could shoot sausages out of her fingers, as long as she still goes on that self-discovery journey."

As per Vellani, the power change might evidently be a slight difference with the character, but the whole show will still revolve following its source material. Given how Ms. Marvel's theme is about teenage journey and self-discovery, which is meant for young audiences, it appears that it would focus more on the character's teenage arc as she descends into a modern-day young superhero.

While Vellani's comment might ease the fans who are worried about the character's power not being accurate from the source material, it looks like Ms. Marvel will still have the same set of abilities just like in Marvel Comics. Aside from that, it's likely that Marvel Studios had to change Ms. Marvel's power origins due to her future connection with Captain Marvel's Brie Larson, which Vellani will be joining in next year's The Marvels.

Ms. Marvel will premiere on Disney+ on June 8th.
