From the busy streets of London to the vast sands of Egypt to the white everything in the asylum, Moon Knight has taken us into a whole new place which is the underworld and what lies beyond the gates of Osiris. Mentioned in the first episode, we finally see what the Field of Reeds look like in Episode 5, however, given what is happening, how will Marc be able to escape there?
Moon Knight Episode 5: What is The Field of Reeds?
Mentioned as early as the first episode on Moon Knight, the Field of Reeds is explained by Steven to a child touring the museum as he discusses that the mummies in the sarcophagus have their hearts in it because the Egyptians believe that the heart will be used to be judged in the underworld where only the worthy people would proceed to the Field of Reeds.
The scene also foreshadowed what will happen to Steven in Episode 5. The child asked him it is sucked being rejected into the Field of Reeds and Steven was quick to ask the child what sense does that make because he is not dead yet. Later in Episode 5, Steven was not able to reach the Field of Reeds as he fell into the sands of the realm of the Duat wherein he froze in sand.
As Taweret guides Marc and Steven, she takes their hearts out to put it on the Scales of Justice opposite the Feather of Truth. Steven explains that the heart shows who a person is in real life and the scales must balance before the journey to A’aru or the Field of Reeds ends to get through. Taweret says that if it wouldn’t one would be thrown away to the sands and be frozen in sand forever.

The ancient Egyptian believes that the A’aru or the Field of Reeds is the counterpart of heaven while the realm of the Duat is hell. One must be worthy to reach the Field of Reeds after Anubis’ Scales of Justice weighs the heart opposite to Ma’at’s Feather of Truth and the scales should balance to be able to get to A’aru. The Field of Reeds is the afterlife, a place close to perfection.
How Will Marc Escape the Field of Reeds?
With the demise of Steven in the realm of the Duat, the scales balanced for Marc and he got to the Field of Reeds. Full of pain after losing Steven, Marc could plead the gods in the Field of Reeds to get his life back stop Harrow and Ammit, bring Khonshu back to life, and maybe, just maybe, he could bring back Steven.
