Mel Gibson Turned Down This Significant Role in Thor Films

Marvel fans will get to see Thor and Hulk's "intergalactic buddy road movie" once Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters next year. Aside from the duo's new adventure in Asgardia, among the exciting things that we'll witness in the movie is the new set of Marvel characters that will be introduced. Among these new charactersare Cate Blanchett's villainous Hela, Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie (rumored to be Thor's new love interest), Jeff Goldblum's supremely powerful Grandmaster, and Karl Urban's Skurge.

Of course, there will also be returning fan-favorite characters like Tom Hiddleston's Loki and Anthony Hopkins' Odin, Thor's father.

Apparently though, it could have been Mel Gibson who's playing Odin all this time.

In an interview with The Guardian, the 60-year-old actor was asked whether there's a superhero film he could have appeared in and he revealed that he was offered the Thor role a long time ago. He said:

Yeah, long time ago, to play Thor's dad. But I didn't do it.

Gibson didn't offer any kind of explanation after this reveal, so we'll never know why he didn't want the role in the first place. However, when asked about his general thoughts regarding the genre, the actor had a generally positive outlook. He said:

Some are good. Some are kind of funny …Guardians of the Galaxy. Or the firstIron Man. And some of them are just like [retreads]. I mean you can watch them do Spider-Man five times … There is a slight shift in film. But, then again, I think all films are suffering from people not being able to now open them with their name. It's a different kind of business these days.

Gibson's latest film project is the action thriller Blood Father, and while it's no superhero movie, it seems to have plenty of action just like a superhero film. We'll never know the exact reason why Gibson turned down Odin, but with Anthony Hopkins already having played the role, it's quite hard to imagine any other actor playing the character.
