Meghan Markle and Prince Harry enjoyed the first few months of their relationship in private. And the minute that their dating life was confirmed to the press, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s lives have never been the same.

Meghan Markle Urged Prince Harry To Release A Statement Regarding The Racist Comments And Liken Her To Princess Diana

In the book Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War Between the Windsors, royal author Tom Bower detailed the first few months of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s relationship. He said that after the couple marked their fifth-monthsary, the Duke of Sussex feared that his relationship with his then-girlfriend would end.

At the time, Markle became the subject of racist remarks from the British press. The incident forced Prince Harry to release a statement urging publicists to stop attacking his wife. But according to Bower, the Duchess of Sussex was the one who insisted that a statement where she would be likened to Princess Diana be released.

Prince Harry’s Former Press Secretary Talked Him Out Of Likening Meghan Markle To Princess Diana

Bower alleged that Prince Harry panicked at the thought of losing Markle. That’s why he followed her orders even though his former press secretary, Jason Knauf, tried to talk him out of it.

“Harry dictated the sentiments for Knauf to fashion into a statement. Committing Knauf to a conundrum, Meghan demanded that the statement should reflect the parallel between her potential fate and Diana’s,” Bower wrote (via Page Six).

Knauf also, reportedly, warned Prince Harry and Markle against comparing the latter to Princess Diana.

“Knauf suggested that over-dramatizing Meghan’s distress would backfire, but Harry was adamant. If Meghan’s wish to be equated with Diana was not satisfied, insisted Harry, he would probably lose her. Knauf acquiesced,” Bower said.

Prince Harry also asked for Prince William’s support on the matter, but the latter hesitated. Little did the Duke of Cambridge know that his brother was just obeying Markle’s orders.

Knauf released the statement on behalf of Prince Harry in 2016. There was no direct mention of Princess Diana, but there was an indirect statement about the tragedies that the Princess of Wales experienced.

“My girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her … This is not a game — it is her life and his,” the statement read.

Meghan Markle And Princess Diana Have Similar Experiences Based On Their Respective Interview

Years later, Prince Harry compared Markle to his late mother after the Duchess of Sussex’s handwritten letters to her dad, Thomas Markle Sr., was published without her consent.

“My deepest fear is history repeating itself. I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditized to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person. I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces,” he said.

But over the years, Prince Harry isn’t the only one who has made comparisons between Markle and Princess Diana. Last year, WWD listed seven similarities between the two women starting off with their battles with depression, their attempts to seek treatment for their mental health, their struggles with negative press, and more.

Vogue also looked into Markle’s tell-all interview with Oprah, as well as Princess Diana’s interview with Martin Bashir, and found some similarities.

The Duchess of Sussex talked about self-harm during her interview. Princess Diana, on the other hand, reportedly cut herself because no one understood what she was going through when she was still alive.
