To the delight of many, The Matrix 4 is returning and so will the returning protagonists' Neo and Trinity as Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss confirm that they signed up for the latest installment of the franchise.

Another familiar name back for The Matrix 4 is director Lana Wachowski. Known as the other half of the Wachowski sisters who made a groundbreaking trilogy with the creativity of the cinematography and visual effects used in The Matrix Trilogy. But why is Lana doing The Matrix 4 on her own, without Lilly?

Lilly Wachowski is still on an extended break since 2016. Lilly describes her break as regards science fiction that one of her feet is out of the door. It seems as if Lilly had gotten tired of being typecast as a director for science fiction that her passion for it diminished through the years.

Lilly seems to want to venture into a different genre of directing. Lilly added that since her transition, science fiction stories thrive on subtexts, and because of this, she did not feel compelled to continue working on stories that require heavy subtext.

Her last science-fiction was for the series Sense 8 then she took a break and tried branching out into a different genre: one she considers a once in a lifetime opportunity: Work In Progress, as it is a drama/comedy series.

With this, Lilly did not pursue The Matrix and left the magic to her sister, Lana Wachowski.

Although this has disappointed most fans and the original team as the band wouldn't be complete for The Matrix 4, the show must go on as there is still an ultra-talented director to take on the project: Lana Wachowski.

Lana, still with magic up her sleeves where she is still as invested in science fiction as then during the time of The Matrix trilogy, shows her passion for mind-bending visual effects and awe-inspiring plot twists. It's just fit for her to take on the project that jump-started her career as a sci-fi director.

One of the new additions of the cast, Jessica Henwick, even claimed that Lana will be changing the industry as a whole.

With the star-studded cast of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss carrying the banner, newcomers such as Neil Patrick Harris, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Eréndira Ibarra, Andrew Caldwell, Brian J. Smith, Ian Pirie, Lavish, and Ellen Hollman, will surely be an asset for Lana's The Matrix 4.

The plot is still in the shade and everyone is just as baffled as to how both Neo and Trinity will be returning but there are a plethora of possibilities for Lana to take on in The Matrix 4.

The Matrix 4 is set to hit theaters on December 22, 2021. The Matrix Trilogy is available online via streaming platforms.
