Who Is Masamune’s Father in Maboroshi?
In Maboroshi, the father of Masamune Kikuiri is none other than Akimune Kikuiri. He works at the Mifuse Steel Factory along with his brother Tokimune and Mutsumi’s stepfather, Mamuro Sagami.
In the eyes of Masamune, his father acts lousy and carefree, often lighting up a cigarette while complaining about his family’s life within the static town of Mifuse. He even calls his life a “life of running away” from his problems.
Akimune even ran away from Misato (his wife) before they were about to get married and settle down. It was only after Misato chased him that Masamune came into the picture, and they finally married each other.
Before the steel factory’s explosion, the father of Masamune had been skipping work. It’s his way of running away again, which Masamune thinks is just a foolish and dumb excuse.
Unfortunately, when Akimune decided to work the night shift for the first time in a while, something happened to him after the explosion.
All of a sudden, the father of Masamune just disappeared, and he was nowhere to be found, leaving only a diary for Misato.

What Happened to Masamune’s Father in Maboroshi?
Sadly, the father of Masamune was eaten by the sacred dragons after he had a crack in his soul, similar to what happened to Sonobe, the girl who confessed her feelings for Masamune and was rejected in the process.
Before his soul cracked, Akimune was closely involved with Itsumi (Saki), whom he discovered was his granddaughter and Mutsumi's daughter.
He wanted to return Itsumi to the real world, but Mamoru opted to lock her within the 5th blast furnace of the steel factory instead in the belief that she was a divine woman.
In the end, Akimune’s emotions overpowered him. He wanted to change just like Masamune, even gradually, but it just wasn’t possible for him.
So, Where Is Masamune’s Father in Maboroshi?
Akimune Kikuiri has completely disappeared after his soul was eaten by the sacred dragon. He never returned to Mifuse, and he was never seen in the real world either.
As a result, Akimune’s brother, Tokimune, took it upon himself to take care of his brother’s family, including his wife, Misato.
