The residents, prohibited from altering their routines, endure dreary daily lives, hoping for a return to normalcy.

One day, Masamune’s mysterious classmate, Atsumi, guides him to the 5th blast furnace, where they encounter a speechless girl with a wild, wolf-like demeanor.

The meeting of Masamune and these two girls disrupts the world’s equilibrium.

The irrepressible love impulse of the young boys and girls, worn out by their monotonous lives, begins to unravel the fabric of the world.

The title of the two films may sound similar, but Netflix’s Maboroshi is not a remake of the 1995 film Maborosi.

The 1995 classic is a moving drama directed by Hirokazu Kareeda and written by Teru Miyamoto and Yoshihisa Ogita.

The story of Maborosi follows Yukimo (Makiko Esumi), who, even amidst her seemingly content life as a wife and a new mother, grapples with recurring nightmares of her grandmother’s tragic death.

When Yukimo’s husband dies by suicide, the resulting stress propels Yukimo into a self-imposed isolation akin to that of a hermit.

It isn’t until a compassionate widower (Takashi Naito) endeavors to get her out of her seclusion that Yukimo begins to emerge from her emotional cocoon.

The two films lie on two different ends of the spectrum in terms of genre. However, both films explore the human side in their ways.

Netflix’s Maboroshi, also known as Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Kojo, is written and directed by Mari Okada (Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans).

The storyboard of the anime film is by Tadashi Hiramatsu (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and Masahiro Ando (Ghost in the Shell).

Meanwhile, the music of the film is composed by Masaru Yokoyama (Classroom of the Elite).

Yuriko Ishii (Jujutsu Kaisen) is credited as the character designer and chief animation director. MAPPA (Chainsaw Man) has produced the anime film that is currently available to stream on Netflix.
