Maboroshi is not exactly a romance anime film, but it talks a lot about love. It explores the relationship between characters, particularly Mutsumi and Masamune. So, does Mutsumi end up with Masamune in Maboroshi?

Do Mutsumi and Masamune Like Each Other in Maboroshi?
At the beginning of the movie, Masamune Kikuiri hates Mutsumi Sagami. He gets annoyed every time he looks at Mutsumi’s face, to the extent that she gets on his nerves even if she does nothing in particular to annoy him.
His hatred for Mutsumi didn’t stop there, especially after he learned about the unfortunate situation with Itsumi.
He immediately judged Mutsumi for allowing Itsumi to be locked within the steel factory, seeing the feral girl’s hopeless condition.
But eventually, Masamune realized that his feeling of love was similar to that of hate. He begins to get interested in everything that Mutsumi says, and he gets excited whenever he’s with her.
In addition, Masamune also feels extremely alive when he’s with Mutsumi, even though he knows the awful truth about their existence.
On the other hand, Mutsumi already knew the truth from the very beginning.
She knows that Masamune is her husband in the real world, but she doesn’t have any intention of living out the same story in the static town of Mifuse, at least in the beginning.
Worse, Mutsumi also knows that Itsumi has feelings for Masamune, even though she’s not supposed to learn how to love another person.
Their situation is complicated as it is, but as the plot unfolds, we see Masamune and Mutsumi’s relationship progress from middle school classmates to actual lovers.

So, Does Mutsumi End Up With Masamune in Maboroshi?
Yes, Mutsumi and Masamune do end up together after everything that happened in Maboroshi.
At some point, Mutsumi and Masamune even shared a passionate kiss under the summer rain. Masamune bravely confessed his feelings for Mutsumi, and the latter accepted despite her initial resistance because of Itsumi’s feelings.
By the end of Maboroshi, Mutsumi bluntly told Itsumi that she would take Masamune’s heart.
Even if she disappears in the real world, she knows that she will be the only girl Masamune will think of the moment the static town of Mifuse ends.
In the real world, Mutsumi and Masamune end up together as husband and wife, while in the abnormal town, Mutsumi and Masamune also end up together despite not knowing when or how Mifuse will end in the future.
