Magic: The Gathering Head Designer Responds to Complaints About The Walking Dead Secret Lair

Today, Wizards of the Coast revealed the limited-time Magic: The Gathering crossover product called Secret Lair x The Walking Dead, featuring the show's iconic characters in "mechanically unique" cards like Michonne, Ruthless Survivor and Negan, the Cold-Blooded. These cards are not alternate versions of Magic cards that already exist like the Godzilla versions in Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths, and they will be legal in Eternal formats like Commander. Many fans in the Magic community are complaining about the new Secret Lair's approach to introducing new cards that will be playable in Commander, because they probably won't get reprinted due to licensing issues.

When this issue was brought up to Magic head designer Mark Rosewater, he explained that if The Walking Dead cards become popular, Wizards might print the Magic versions of these cards. "While the Secret Lair is the one chance to get the Walking Dead versions of these cards, we have the ability to print the Magic versions of these cards in future products," Rosewater said. "So, let's say Negan becomes a popular Commander, we can print the Magic version (same card mechanically, but with a Magic name and art) in any number of future products. This is not a case of us being unable to make more of a popularly played card."

If these cards become popular in Commander, more players might want it more, and many are already concerned that getting a copies of these unique cards may be difficult since the Secret Lair products are only available exclusively online for one week.
