Kathleen Kennedy Clarifies Comments about Female Directors in Star Wars, More Rogue One News

The people behind Rogue One: A Star Wars Story had a lot to say during the press event this weekend, io9reports. They discussed the possibility of Star Wars cartoon/movie crossovers, female directors, Darth Vader and Alan Tudyk's groin. There was a lot of new information.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy talked about Clone Wars character Saw Gerrera appearing in Rogue One. She said the move didn't necessarily mean there would be more crossovers between the Star Wars movies and cartoons. "That isn't really the approach that we have. We don't sit down and start isolating a list of characters and then build stories around those," she said. "We really are starting with the stories themselves, and then if some of those characters might come into what it is we want to do or say, we'll consider it then. But that's not part of the strategy."

Kennedy also clarified her comments on female directors. She had previously said something that could be taken to mean a female director needed to be super experienced in blockbuster movies, which caused many to point out this was a pretty high standard considering George Lucas himself jumped from indie films to straight to Star Wars.

Kennedy said, "That quote was taken out of context. As you can imagine, I have every intention of giving someone an opportunity. If somebody actually moves through the process of making movies, and wants to make a Star Wars movie, and shows that they have actually stepped into the role on that level, of course we're going to consider a woman. That goes without saying."

Director Gareth Edwards admitted to fanboying with Ben Mendhelson over Darth Vader being present. Alan Tudyk discussed "towering over everyone" in his stilted suit while playing the imperial droid K2-S0. Diego Luna said of dealing with Tudyk in the costume, "the first month, we just couldn't look at him because he did look ridiculous. It was the tightest pajamas ever, and on stilts, you were always the height of his balls [...]. It was quite intimidating!"

Gareth Edwards said of Tudyk that "a lot of the humor that's in the film that's really funny is just [Alan] improvising. He was given freedom to do whatever he wanted and there are shots we couldn't use because sometimes I was holding the camera and I'm laughing, and the camera's rocking up and down."

That's a lot of news! Rogue One is closer than ever and it sounds like it will be a fun experience! Are you looking forward to the movie?
