Lucasfilm Chief Says Han Solo Movie is Similar to a Western

Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy has a lot to say about the upcoming Han Solo movie, Varietyreports. She also has some fresh information on the upcoming prequel movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. She also reveals how Lucasfilm is trying to do more to promote diversity within the movie industry.

Kennedy described Rogue One as having a "World War II adventure movie" sort of feel. "We felt that's so indicative of what those saga films are," she said. "Initially, we probably will begin the film in a way that is traditional, with just the title."

As for the Han Solo spinoff, she described that one as having an entirely different feel. "This moves closer to a heist or Western type feel,"Kennedy said. "We've talked about [Frederic] Remington and those primary colors that are used in his paintings defining the look and feel of the film."

Kennedy is also talked about wanting to promote diversity within the Star Wars franchise and said finding a female director was a big priority. "We want to make sure that when we bring a female director in to do Star Wars, they're set up for success," says Kennedy. "They're gigantic films, and you can't come into them with essentially no experience." She continued that since women don't get many opportunities as directors, they're trying to indentify talented women at early stages in their careers. "We want to really start to focus in on people we would love to work with and see what kinds of things they're doing to progress up that ladder now, and then pull them in when the time is right."

Kennedy also talked about Lucasfilm's partnership with Magic Leap, a virtual reality startup, and how they're exploring new avenues for the Star Wars franchise. We're starting to have a lot more conversations with regard to mixed-reality, VR, AR, and what those experiences may be as an adjunct to what we're doing with these films," said Kennedy. "There's no question that we're going to be exploring that."

It looks like Star Wars is moving forward full speed ahead, rather than stagnating. I'm glad Lucasfilm is at least thinking about how to give different people better opportunities. What do you think? Are you looking forward to any of these films?
