Fans expected to catch their first glimpse of Black Adam in Shazam! in 2019, but the antihero remained elusive. There have been rumors all flying around through the years, including whispers that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will play the supercharged superhero, but news has been scarce. Eventually, they announced that the Black Adam would be an independent Shazam! Spinoff.

Now that The Batman is out and introduced the DC universe in full blast, interest in the other DC films about to come out has risen, and Black Adam is back under the limelight.

Black Adam first appeared in 1945's Marvel Family #1 from Fawcett Comics. He was supposed to be a one-time villain, dying and fading out of the scene, but his story became the perfect precursor for his reappearance in later comic books, turning him from guest villain to arch-nemesis.

In the comic books, Black Adam came billions of years before the events in Shazam! The Wizard Shazam was looking for a successor to protect ancient Egypt. The Wizard found Teth Adam in fictional Kahndaq, and he then proceeds to imbue Teth Adam with powers similar to that of Shazam. The major difference is that Adam draws his powers from ancient Egyptian Gods.

Teth Adam befriends other entities and supernatural powers, but after his homeland is destroyed by Akh-Ton, who wields the Orb of Ra, he loses control and goes wild. This destruction forces the Wizard to trap him in a scarab, where he remains until modern times.

Black Adam premiered on October 21, 2022, and many expect this to be The Rock's biggest box office opening ever.

There have been delays in the movie's production. It was initially pegged to come out in December 2021, but production was affected by the pandemic. When they resumed production, the first estimated release date was July 29, 2022, but this date was set-back, hopefully, one last time.

Black Adam Cast

Aldis Hodge will play Carter Hall, aka Hawkman, while Quintessa Swindell will play Cyclone. Pierce Brosnan, former James Bond, will play Doctor Fate.

Alongside these actors, Sarah Shahi will act as Adrianna Tomaz, Black Adam's potential love interest if we follow the story from the comics.

We will also see Noah Centineo (famous for his role in the To All The Boys I've Loved Before movies) as Albert Rothstein or Atom Smasher. DC recently released a Black Adam comic preview called Black Adam: The Justice Society Files – Atom Smasher #1. In the comic, we get to see Albert, aka Atom Smasher, talk to his uncle.

Black Adam will be our introduction to Atom Smasher, for it is said to be the jumping point for many superheroes in the DC cinematic universe.

Black Adam Cameos: Will Other Superheroes Appear on Black Adam?

There have been rumors flying around that certain DC superheroes will make cameos in Black Adam, but there have been no confirmation from any of the involved parties. But in one of his recent tweets, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Black Adam himself, teased a potential Superman cameo.

It seems that fans will finally see Henry Cavill take on the mantle of the Man of Steel, but there is a caveat - recent reports say that the Superman cameo will be faceless.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Johnson extends his welcome to Cavill as he allegedly returns to wear Superman's cape.

So, for years, audiences have been so passionate and vocal about... we've established Black Adam as the most powerful and unstoppable force on our planet. But the fans have been so passionate about 'Where is the most unstoppable force in the universe? Where is he?' Well, we've all been fighting for this moment, so I will say this: Welcome home.

Black Adam 'meets' Superman

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is Black Adam

Black Adam will be a sequel to Shazam! In Shazam!, Billy learns about an

ancient warrior who has the wisdom of Solomon, the power of Zeus, the strength of Hercules, the courage of Achilles, the stamina of Atlas, and the speed of Mercury. This hero turned against what he was fighting for and destroyed a civilization.

DC released the following synopsis:

Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the Egyptian gods – and imprisoned just as quickly – Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.

Other details about the movie have been very well kept.

DC has been staying on brand with its latest releases, opting for darker themes and more brutal sequences. We can expect the same for Black Adam.

Black Adam Reshoots

DC refocused their efforts on other existing projects after it announced the cancellation of Batgirl.

The studio conducted its first test screening for Black Adam, and when it scored a 60% approval rate, the movie went back for reshoots. Reportedly, the reshoots included a post-credit scene that further established Black Adam's connection to the rest of the DCEU.

Black Adam and Shazam!

Black Adam and Shazam! were initially scripted to share one movie where both of their origin stories will be told, but Johnson felt that it would do Black Adam an injustice.

When speaking with Vanity Fair, Johnson talked about how he advocated hard for Black Adam to get his own movie.

When the first draft of the movie came to us, it was a combination of Black Adam and Shazam: Two origin stories in one movie. Now that was the goal, so it wasn’t a complete surprise. But when I read that, I just knew in my gut, ‘We can’t make this movie like this. We would be doing Black Adam an incredible disservice.’ It would’ve been fine for Shazam having two origin stories converge in one movie, but not good for Black Adam.

Black Adam Trailer: Is There a Trailer for Black Adam?

Black Adam Comic-Con Sneak Peak

During the 2022 SDCC event held from July 21 to July 24, DC released a sneak peek of its upcoming movie, Black Adam.

Johnson talked about the SDCC video, saying how Black Adam will lay down the foundation for the DCEU.

That footage is a reflection of our tone. That footage is also a reflection of our director's vision, who wanted to create something that was different; who wanted to create a movie that was disruptive. But also he wanted to create a movie that would start the pendulum swing in the DC universe. In addition to the hierarchy of power that I've been talking about, this pendulum swing [will] usher in a new era of the DC Universe. A new antihero era; a new era of tone, and a new era of story. And also, it's this incredible opportunity that we have at Seven Bucks Productions for Black Adam's storytelling to build out the DC Universe with disruption and with respect. Listening to the fans, because they'll always guide you.

No one can stand in Black Adam's way

Black Adam will be available in theatres upon its release. Once its theatrical period is up and partnerships with streaming services have been finalized, we may watch Black Adam on sites like Netflix, HBO, Amazon Premium, etc.

How Well Did Black Adam Perform?

Black Adam had the potential to change the way superheroes are made and was the antihero we needed. The film came out with a bang, but it seems that the spark fizzled out quite quickly once viewers got to see the movie. The reviews for the film emphasized how under-utilized Johnson's charisma was and how Black Adam was a great revamp for a new DC universe that we may not see in the future.

Good Morning America said of the movie;

Black Adam" feels like an elaborate setup for a franchise no one's made any plans to film. Worse, it sidelines the 270 pounds of charisma that is Johnson, who still bulldozes through the film like a human muscle car but is deprived of the wicked sass that this 50-year-old son of a Black father and Samoan mother has been generating since his days as a pro wrestler

Meanwhile, Indiewire also discussed the potential of the film, saying that the film felt like it was a copy and over-tested.

And so Johnson has made a decidedly PG-13 movie that lacks the imagination to take anyone with it. There isn’t a single character here that doesn’t feel like a cheap photocopy of one from Gotham or the MCU, not a single beat that doesn’t feel like it hasn’t been audience-tested within an inch of its life, not a single fight scene that isn’t smothered to death by the DCEU’s signature CGI gloop. “The superhero-industrial complex is worth a lot of money,” a character whose name I’ve already forgotten observes at one point, and “Black Adam” becomes a part of that business with all the fun and enthusiasm of a hedge fund buying $200 million worth of blue chip stocks.

Rotten Tomatoes also scored the film relatively low, with an 88% audience score and landing on 43% on the Tomatometer. Their critics' consensus read:

Black Adam may end up pointing the way to an exciting future for DC films, but as a standalone experience, it's a wildly uneven letdown.
