A few months ago, Warner Bros. officially greenlight a sequel to the hit 2019 film Joker with Joaquin Phoenix reprising his Oscar-winning role and Todd Phillips returning to direct. Soon after, Lady Gaga was cast to co-star in the film as Harley Quinn. Now, the highly-anticipated sequel has added another cast member to its growing ensemble.
Deadline has reported that Oscar-nominated actress Catherine Keener is joining the cast of Joker: Folie à Deux for a major role. The details regarding her role in the follow-up installment are being kept under wraps at the moment. Besides Phoenix and Gaga, Zazie Beetz and Brendan Gleeson were also tapped to join the ensemble.
Production is set to begin this December in Los Angeles. Besides returning to direct the film, Phillips is also co-writing the screenplay with Scott Silver. So far, the details of the plot of the second film are unknown although it is believed to have musical elements and will be set mostly in Arkham Asylum.
Keener recently starred in the hit Netflix film The Adam Project. She previously appeared in other films such as The Croods: A New Age, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Incredibles 2, Get Out, and Begin Again. She received Oscar nominations for her roles in Being John Malkovich and Capote. Last year, she starred in the Netflix series Brand New Cherry Flavor.
It is always great whenever a talented actor gets cast in a project like this and Keener is certainly no exception for that. It is interesting to see what kind of role will she play in the sequel and how she will exactly play into the story of the film.
Joker: Folie à Deux is slated for release in theaters on October 4, 2024. You can check more details about it here.
