James Gunn Subtly Confirms First Project in DCU's New Era

Since James Gunn left Marvel to become DC Studios' new co-head, he has made himself quite at home in the corners of news headlines as he builds his new DCEU era. Despite facing criticism for his decisions to scrap some original DC projects and drop beloved DCU actors, some fans still have faith that whatever Gunn has in store is for the betterment of the franchise.

The majority of Gunn and Safran's plans for DC Studios remain unknown, but one of the few projects confirmed to usher in the new era of the DCEU is the second season of Peacemaker.

Upon celebrating the one-year anniversary of the HBO Max smash hit, Gunn hinted via tweet that he’ll see all of his collaborators "soon," which sparks rumors that the comeback of John Cena’s Christopher Smith is top on the priority list.

Gunn confirmed in February that Peacemaker is renewed for a second season. “Creating Peacemaker has been one of the true highlights of my life, both professionally and otherwise, with John Cena and the incredible creative team around me, as well as our partners at HBO Max,” Gunn said in a statement. “To have something we all love so much be loved by the audience in turn has been a wonderful experience. I can’t wait for folks to see where team Peacemaker goes in season two!”

In August amid the news that Warner Bros. has killed Batgirl from being released either on the streamer or in theaters due to HBO Max reportedly to merge with Discovery+, the DC’s co-head broke his silence that Peacemaker season two will remain secured

Despite the hint, it remains unknown when Peacemaker Season 2 may begin filming. With Gunn's involvement in the upcoming DC projects, it's been reported that he's also working on another Suicide Squad spinoff. “We're working on something else now, another TV show that's connected to that universe,” Gunn revealed in January 2022.

Peacemaker is an eight-episode series that spun out of The Suicide Squad (2021), a film both written and directed by Gunn. The show follows Christopher Smith, AKA Peacemaker (John Cena), as he is forced to continue working for Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) as part of a team other than the Suicide Squad, one trying to prevent an alien invasion.

The first season of Peacemaker is now streaming on HBO Max.
