James Gunn Reveals Reason for Rejecting R-Rated Guardians of the Galaxy Film

I think most of us can agree that Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's best films and a lot of credit goes to James Gunn who successfully turned a band of misfits from D-list characters to some of the franchise's most beloved heroes. The same thing can be said about his latest DC Extended Universe film The Suicide Squad and when you think about it, both projects share some undeniable similarities.

We've already seen what Gunn can do if he's given free rein over a project and with The Suicide Squad being a gory and chaotic masterpiece, some fans are wondering how an R-rated Guardians of the Galaxy project would look like. Surprisingly enough, the director isn't down with the idea of helming a project that would see the likes of Star-Lord, Drax, Groot, and Rocket take an edgier creative direction.

During an interview with Collider, James instantly rejected the idea of GOTG being turned into a Rated R film simply because the MCU series caters to a different set of audiences. He explains: "I would never do an R-rated Guardians of the Galaxy. It just wouldn't be what that show is. It's for families, and old people love it. It's more like a fairy tale. And I think it is completely, that is what it is. Suicide Squad is something very different than that, and the stakes are different. All of that is different."

The Guardians franchise is already perfect the way it is and you know what they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Meanwhile, GOTG Vol. 3 is already shaping up to be an explosive project, and with Gunn rumored to leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe after working on the film, I think we can expect the film to have a huge blowoff, probably even at the same level as Avengers: Endgame. To be perfectly honest, the idea of Gunn exiting the billion-dollar franchise isn't something that excites me but I guess all good things must come to an end.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will begin filming later this year.
