Is Suicide Squad 2 a Sequel or a Reboot?

There is a lot of confusion about The Suicide Squad since it is sometimes referred to like Suicide Squad 2 or simply Suicide Squad like the 2016 film. However, it's actually a little bit of both.

The Suicide Squad is a standalone sequel to the 2016 movie. It is described as a "relaunch" considering that it will not be a direct sequel to the first Suicide Squad film. Instead, it is set to take the franchise in a new direction but will still keep most of the original cast.

Like the first film, Task Force X is once again sent on a mission that will lessen their prison sentence. This time, they are sent to Corto Maltese where they have to destroy a prison and laboratory that has existed since the Nazi era.

The premise of The Suicide Squad reads as follows:

"Imprisoned convicts from Task Force X are sent on a new, sentence-easing mission to the South American island of Corto Maltese to destroy Jotunheim, a Nazi-era prison and laboratory which held political prisoners and conducted experiments."

Who Is In Suicide Squad 2?

Most of the main cast of Suicide Squad (2016) will be back in the 2021 film. One notable character who will not return is Deadshot, who has been written off due to Will Smith's scheduling problems.

Jared Leto was initially set to reprise his role as Joker in The Suicide Squad. However, the script has changed drastically since James Gunn was confirmed to write and direct the film. For now, Joker is not expected to return although there are speculations Leto will have a small cameo in the movie.

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn: A former psychiatrist turned criminal who was also Joker's girlfriend. Harley is once again forced into joining Task Force X to go on a dangerous mission.

Viola Davis as Amanda Waller: The A.R.G.U.S. agent who runs the Task Force X program is back and this time, she's recruiting more villains to join Harley and her original team.

Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag: The colonel will be back to once again serve as the leader of Task Force X. However, Kinnaman has confirmed that the character will be less serious and is expected to loosen up a bit in The Suicide Squad.

Jai Courtney as Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang: The Australian thief and longtime resident of Belle Reve Penitentiary is the fourth cast member from the original film who will return in the reboot.

Idris Elba as Robert DuBois/Bloodsport: A mercenary who shot Superman with a kryptonite bullet, Dubois agrees to join Task Force X for a shorter prison sentence. Elba was initially cast to replace Smith as Deadshot but his character was changed during pre-production.

John Cena as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker: A pacifist diplomat who believes in peace and is willing to do anything to achieve it. Cena himself describes the character as "a douchey Captain America."

Peter Capaldi as Clifford DeVoe/Thinker: A highly intelligent supervillain who ends up joining Task Force X. Capaldi's version of the character will be a hybridization of DeVoe and the New 52 Thinkers.

Juan Diego Botto as Silvio Luna: The dictator of Corto Maltese who might be in control of Jotunheim, the mysterious facility where prisoners are being experimented on.

Alice Braga as Sol Soria: Although not much is known about the character, there are speculations that she is a resident of Corto Maltese who ends up working with Task Force X.

Storm Reid as Tyla DuBois: Reid plays Bloodsport's daughter who is the main reason why he joins Task Force X. DuBois believes he will get the chance to see Tyla if he completes the mission.

Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt: An aide to Amanda Waller, Emilia could be in charge of bringing together the convicts who will make up the new Task Force X.

Is Peacemaker Getting A Suicide Squad Spin-Off Series?

James Gunn had actually written the screenplay for a spin-off show during the COVID-19 lockdowns and HBO Max has ordered Peacemaker straight-to-series with eight episodes. The new series will focus on John Cena's character and also star Agee's John Economos and Holland's Emilia Harcourt.

James Gunn has already joked that all of the characters are villains. However, the main villain in the film could be Silvio Luna, the dictator of Corto Maltese.

When Will The Suicide Squad 2 Trailer Be Released?

There were two teasers for The Suicide Squad that was dropped during DC FanDome. The first one served as a "roll call" that introduced all of the characters in the film. The second one was a sizzle reel that offered a behind-the-scenes look at the movie.

So when is the Suicide Squad trailer going to be released? James Gunn had previously stated that he is aware that fans are begging for the first teaser. However, he asked fans to be patient. There are speculations that the trailer will be dropped during San Diego Comic-Con 2021.

The Suicide Squad is currently in post-production and is scheduled to premiere in limited theaters as well as on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
