James Gunn on That Controversial ‘Captain America: Steve Rogers #1’ Twist

It's been less than a week since it was revealed that Captain America is apparently a villain, to be specific a Hydra plant, in the first issue of Captain America: Steve Rogers. However, the twist has already caused quite a ruckus online, that writer Nick Spencer had even gotten death threats for it. The magnitude of the issue is so huge that it even reached the ears of Captain America actor Chris Evans and Marvel legend Stan Lee, who both weighed in on the issue.

Evans may not be in agreement with the twist, but his reaction was less than aggressive than most fans. Meanwhile, Stan Lee's two cents on the matter sided more with the creators of the comics.

While Evans and Lee's thoughts on the matter received quite the reaction from fans, it's Marvel director James Gunn's thoughts on the issue which really catches one's attention, and would perhaps force some fans to contemplate all the hate they've been throwing towards the comics' creators and a few fans who have a more open mind.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director took to his official Facebook page to fans who were more aggressive than usual with their reactions. He said:

If you're a forty-year-old dude claiming a comics company ruined your childhood because of a plot twist, you might consider that your childhood really wasn't that great to begin with.

Now it's expected that everybody will not agree with Gunn, and with the internet being a space for expression, the director's comments were met with quite a handful of backlash. Some fans speculated that he had a hand in the Captain America Hydra twist, while others had more grave thoughts, wishing harm on Gunn's pet cat, Emily.

This must have been the director's breaking point, so he responded to a fan who made such a threat with a more lengthy statement – a statement that would perhaps help others find more reason to be less aggressive towards the people involved in the twist.

The director posted the lengthy statement via Facebook as well. Take a look:

It is understandable how many die-hard fans felt betrayed by Marvel allowing such a twist on one of comic book's iconic superheroes. These 5 reasons alone would definitely make you question, and quite angry, with the decision of making Cap a Hydra agent. However, while it's okay to hate the story and express why one hates such a decision, it is not cool to make insults and threaten someone's life, or pet. There is no excuse for that. It is simply mean.

That said, it's worth noting that Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 is the comic book series' first issue. There's still hope of seeing Cap's return to the good side. There's a lot that could still take place in the next installments of the comics. This fan theory explaining why the whole Hydra thing could be just a set up for another plot twist may even turn out to be true.

Hopefully, Gunn's statement has given voice to reason, and I sincerely wish this whole fiasco would end and no other lives will be threatened.
