James Gunn Addresses Potential Marvel Return After Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

James Gunn may have been working non-stop on building the future of the DC Extended Universe, but he still has unfinished business with Marvel Studios which involves wrapping up the adventures of the Guardians in Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

After Gunn unceremoniously got fired from Marvel Studios back in 2018 due to his past problematic tweets, he celebrated with excitement on his first day as one of DC Studios’ leaders by using a Man of Steel’s comic panel on his Twitter post. However, recently speaking with Entertainment Tonight, when asked on whether he plans to helm another Marvel project, James Gunn keeps an open mind for its future potential changes. Check out his full comment below:

“At least for the time being,” Gunn says, pertaining to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 being his current last MCU project, “I mean, never say never. Who knows? But for the time being, yeah.”

Although Gunn has previously stated he had already accomplished what he wanted to contribute in the MCU and is ready to move forward by heading over to his new executive position under DC Studios, it seems likely that he is also looking forward to the thought of returning for a few more Marvel projects to helm.

After all, seeing as this is going to be the very last volume of the Guardians’ franchise, it is only natural that he feels emotional about ending their story and this being the last time of seeing the cast together as the Guardians. He expresses his reason for putting them back together one last time, emphasizing Bautista and Klementieff:

“I really wanted to put them at the center of the story. I think they’ve become background characters for the last few movies that they’ve been in — they have not had an opportunity to do very much. So to be able to put them at the center of this was a lot of fun for me.”

Meanwhile, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special premieres this November 25 on Disney Plus, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 expected on May 5, 2023.
