Jake Gyllenhaal in Talks to Play Villain for Spider-Man: Homecoming Sequel

Though Spider-Man may have died in Infinity War, people are still expecting Holland to come back in the next film; after all the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming releases after Avengers 4. News has it that Sony has found someone to play the villain, and it's actually someone that was very close to playing Spider-Man before.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jake Gyllenhaal is currently in talks to play Mysterio for the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel. With a lot of people expecting the villain to be Kraven the Hunter this time around, special effects master Mysterio is certainly an interesting choice.

It's also worth noting that back during the Sam Raimi Spider-Man days, Gyllenhaal was in line to replace Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man should Maguire's Seabiscuit injury stop him from returning to the role. Lucky for Maguire, he recovered, and Gyllenhaal never had to replace him. Now there are whispers going around that Gyllenhaal is in line to replace Ben Affleck as Batman for the DCEU.

With Mysterio being rumored as the villain for Spider-Man 2, I won't be surprised if he's not joined by a bunch of other Spidey villains, albeit in smaller roles. Though Vulture was the main bad for Homecoming, the film still gave us two Shockers, the Tinkerer, Scorpion, and the Prowler. If you even count Peter's friend Ned Leeds, you have Hobgoblin.

Gyllenhaal is still in talks, but hopefully we get to see him play a great part in the MCU.

The Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel comes out July 5, 2019.
