Is Horimiya: The Missing Pieces Canon?
Usually, when a new anime season is released, it continues where the anime adaptation has left off. However, the case is not the same with Horimiya: The Missing Pieces.
The anime released in 2021 covered all the essential aspects of the manga, including the Ending arc, which is Hori and Miyamura’s graduation.
The new anime will then cover the in-between scenes that are not part of the first anime, hence the title, The Missing Pieces.
This means that the new anime is still canon and will give fans of the popular romantic comedy series a chance to see their favorite scenes from the Horimiya manga.
This rarely happens in an anime, but we are not surprised, as the show's fans have been demanding a new season as they need more of the titular couple.
So, Is Horimiya: The Missing Pieces a Second Season, a Prequel, or a Spin-off?
It is important to differentiate the three before we explain which category Horimiya: The Missing Pieces falls under.
A second season is an anime series where the story continues where it left off.
In this case, it should tell us what happens to Hori and Miyamura after they graduate high school.
Meanwhile, a prequel tells what happened before the story. In Horimiya, it will be what happened before Hori and Miyamura met.
Finally, a spin-off is a story based on the existing work but focuses on different aspects, like what the other characters are doing during the main arcs.
Horimiya: The Missing Pieces is quite similar to a spin-off. Although it will still focus on Hori and Miyamura, the upcoming series will emphasize scenes that are not part of the main story.
From that aspect, we can still expect to see some of the scenes from the original anime connect each scene, but with added moments of the two protagonists and their friends.
Many manga fans are thrilled to see the show as they will see all their favorite moments from the manga animated.
