Indiana Jones 5 Director Spills Major Details About Harrison Ford's De-Aging

Harrison Ford is set to don the fedora for the last time in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. While we will be seeing his final adventure in the role, the film will also feature flashbacks during the character's younger years around the same era as the original trilogy.

Just like some of the films and TV shows that we've seen in the last several years, they utilized de-aging technology to recreate the actor's younger physical appearance. Now, we have some new exciting details regarding the flashback sequence.

In an interview with Total Film (via GamesRadar), director James Mangold revealed that the opening sequence of the film will indeed be a 25-minute flashback featuring a de-aged Ford. He explained the process of how they shot the sequence.

"I just shot him, and he just pretended that he was 35. But the technology involved is a whole other thing," he said.

"We had hundreds of hours of footage of him in close-ups, in mediums, in wides, in every kind of lighting, night and day. I could shoot Harrison on a Monday as, you know, a 79-year-old playing a 35- year-old, and I could see dailies by Wednesday with his head already replaced."

Mangold also discussed how the technology has become faster as the process didn't take a lot of time. "It wasn’t a year of effort to get to a first pass. It was an incredible technology, and, in many ways, I just didn’t think about it," he added.

In addition, the director also explained why he decided to start the film with a 25-minute flashback sequence and how it sets up the rest of the movie which is set in the year 1969.

"I just focused on shooting what’s [approximately] a 25-minute opening extravaganza that was my chance to just let it rip. The goal was to give the audience a full-bodied taste of what they missed so much," Mangold said.

"Because then when the movie lands in 1969, they’re going to have to make an adjustment to what it is now, which is different from what it was."

This is certainly an exciting piece of information regarding the film since it sounds like it will start with a throwback to the original trilogy. Hopefully, the de-aging technology will indeed work during the sequence and it won't be as jarring as some of the films that have used it in the past.
