Before the release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, we knew that Shia LaBeouf won't be reprising his role of Mutt Williams in the film and it made fans wonder about how the movie will address his absence.

As it turns out, Mutt already died off-screen prior to the events of the new film as they revealed that he was a casualty of the Vietnam War. The effect of his death contributed to Indiana Jones' arc in the movie, especially since it also resulted in his separation from Marion Ravenwood.

Some fans speculated that killing off Mutt off-screen was a result of LaBeouf's real-life controversies in recent years. Now, we have an official explanation from the director himself regarding the character's surprising fate.

In an interview with Variety, director James Mangold explained why they decided to kill off Mutt Williams off-screen prior to the events of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

He affirmed that LaBeouf's real-life situation has nothing to do with the decision and it's all attributed to the emotional arc that they want to set up for Indiana Jones.

"That seemed to me to be right emotionally that a disillusioned hero could end up at this wonderful tumultuous moment in world history and — with his son gone and his wife gone — that he’d picture himself staying in the place he loves best, which is this imagining these worlds," he said.

"It’s separate from all past studio, political intrigue on movies I didn’t make. You were either going to make a movie all about the two of them or you’re going to have to find a way to not have [Mutt] around, because he was too significant a player in the previous film to just pretend he didn’t exist."

Mangold added, "I didn’t think his whole thing worked that well in the previous film. I just went towards something else because it was what was more interesting to me."

LaBeouf's presence was one of the main criticisms in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull so there is no doubt that Mangold and his team really tried hard to address his absence and not just ignore his inclusion in the canon's past.

While it might be jarring at first, it was able to work for Indiana Jones' emotional arc in the new film as his journey became more cathartic and meaningful.

Based on the audience responses, the decision did not bother a lot of them and we can now say that Mangold was successfully able to figure out a satisfying explanation to the character's fate.
