Marion Ravenwood made her surprise return during the end of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny with Karen Allen reprising the role one last time and giving us a heartwarming and emotional sendoff to the relationship between her and Indy.

While fans are delighted to see her return even for just a brief moment, a lot of them were also wondering why she wasn't part of the film's main adventure and only showed up at the end.

There's no doubt that Marion is an important part of Indiana Jones' journey although you can also argue that the story itself did set up a logical explanation for her absence throughout the majority of the film.

Nevertheless, it was a great reward for long-time fans of the franchise and now Allen herself has shared her thoughts regarding her celebrated return.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Allen revealed that her character originally had a bigger screen time back when Steven Spielberg was attached to direct the film.

However, as we all know, the plans changed when James Mangold took over the directorial duty and decided that she'll only show up for a brief moment during the end.

"When Steven [Spielberg] was still gonna direct the film, I didn’t have the opportunity to read any of those scripts, although I know that Marion was much more involved in the story at that juncture," she said.

"So I knew James [Mangold] had hired new writers and that there was going to be a whole new approach with a new director and new writers, but I was really going into the unknown."

While Allen was happy with the poignant moment that happened between the two characters in the film, she was also disappointed about how they ended up reducing her role.

"The next thing I knew, I was reading a script that told [Dial of Destiny’s] story, and of course, I was disappointed. I had thought that I would be majorly a part of the film, and that was just not the direction they decided to go," she shared.

"I think they had some problems to solve with the story in terms of Shia LaBeouf not coming back, and they chose to create this story that Mutt had been killed in the war and that it put a wedge between Marion and Indy."

Allen concluded, "I mean, you could have knocked me over with a feather when I read it. But I was really happy that they came back together in the end."

It is understandable to hear Allen's frustration over the character's screen time and fans would have definitely loved to see her be part of the main adventure itself in some capacity.

However, despite her smaller screen time, she still had a big impact on the emotional ending of the film,, and her appearance became one of the highlights for the fans.
