Avatar 2: The Way of Water (2022) is the highly-anticipated sequel to James Cameron's revolutionary sci-fi epic Avatar (2009), a film that took the global box office by storm in 2009. But how many Avatar sequels are coming?
Check out the epic new trailer for Avatar 2: The Way of Water below:
While Avatar: The Way of Water is obviously a sequel to Avatar, taking place 10 years later, that doesn't mean that James Cameron wishes for audiences to necessarily think of it as such.
In fact, he has previously hinted that every time a new Avatar film is released, that it will serve as its own entity entirely. In other words, while following on from a predecessor, no less, it would also act independently of it.
With all of that said, a sequel is a sequel, especially when it sees the return of several characters and follows on chronologically. So how many Avatar sequels are coming?
Well, unless you've been hiding under a rock for the past couple of years, you'll probably know that there will be five Avatar movies in total! And each of them already has a theatrical release date...
Avatar 3 will release on December 20, 2024, Avatar 4 will follow on December 18, 2026, and Avatar 5 on December 22, 2028, respectively. So every two years after Avatar: The Way of Water is released, we'll get a new Avatar sequel.
To many fans, this might seem like over-kill, but on the other hand, fans have been waiting 13 years for Avatar: The Way of Water. And besides, having each subsequent film spread apart by two years is hardly excessive.
Let's not forget that movies such as Harry Potter and The Hobbit once dominated Christmas every year for several years, while Marvel Cinematic Universe movies show up every few months throughout any given year.
By comparison, the plan for the next four Avatar movies actually seems quite modest. With that said, the fact that three additional sequels are already in production, one of which is "95%" complete, does seem a little presumptuous.
